Friday Fryer (August 4, 2006)

by user Christof

This week has been quite a cooker in the East, weather wise. On the other hand, the sports world has been awfully quiet. Today is Friday, however, so someone is going to get the Friday Fryer Chair!

First up this week is Floyd Landis. The more information that is released, the more he looks guilty in regards to cheating at the Tour De France. However, one is innocent until proven guilty, or at least, until the B Sample is tested. So Mr. Landis is spared the Chair for at least one more week.

Next up, is the arrested player. We had reports this week of two additional players being busted by the police this year. The latest is former Philadelphia Phillies and current Texas Rangers starting pitcher Vicente Padilla. Mr. Padilla was sent to the big house on July 7th for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. It was rumored that Padilla had a drinking problem while with the Phillies but many brushed it off as his way of dealing with the fact that he pitched for a hopeless, rudderless organdization. Guess that wasn't the problem after all. Since the arrest was July 7th and not during this week, Mr. Padilla only gets the nomination and not the chair.

And now the winner for this week Friday Fryer Chair: the NFL Hold-Out. THe NFL Hold-Out includes both rookies and veterans who have yet to report because they have not signed a contract or want a better contract. Yo folks, you are not gaining the fans respect when you are demanding to be made $2 million a year instead of $1.9 million. We fans, many of whom won't make $2 million in their entire life, are getting tired of hearing you whine about being underpaid. You are playing a kid's sport. Shut up and take the money. Invest half of it in value stock (ala Berkshire Hathaway) and bonds, and you and your family will be living the good life for decades. There will come a point when salaries and players attitudes will get so high and out of whack, that it will turn off the average fan. And then, the whole system will collapse. But, I guess the players and owners want to see it happen one day. Hence, they get the Chair this week.

Until next Friday, keep it cool!

"Keep it cool" is not quite as good as "Let's all be good sports"...

Fair enough. I hadn't heard that. Here in Birmingham, England it's been 20 degrees and overcast all week.

20 degrees? You guys still use that "Centigrade" crap over there? This article points out the East Coast Bias in all media, once again. "This week has been quite a cooker in the East, weather wise." It's been a cooker everywhere... Phoenix has hit 120, Denver has hit 110... There is more to the United States than the ACC, SEC, Big East and Eastern Conferences. We are here too!

Well, we use a whole bunch of temperature. We use farenheit in summer, but celsius in winter (it makes it sound more extreme), but there is no clear moment when we go to one and leave the other. I just used 20 as I have a little temperature thing on my desktop, and that was what it said. If it helps, 20C is 86F. Nice and cool.

"Shut up and take the money"--that should be made into a huge banner and put up during the draft, and in the locker room. great article!!

NFL players have a better argument over salaries than MLB players. NFL contracts are backloaded, so teams can cut them before they see the "big money." MLB players are guaranteed their contracts.

Sad to see in this day and age that a #2 pick can hold out and demand more money than the #1 pick with a straight face.

Even though a HB usually gets more money than a DT and most would argue that the HB is better than the DT anyway?

well you cant really compare a dt to an hb. its like comparing apples to oranges, its pretty irrelavant. how can you compare their stats anyway? if anything, i'd say the hb gets more recognition

granted, bush got more money, but mario williams got more GUARANTEED money. everyone keeps talking about the uncertainty of an nfl players career, so going by that view, williams still came out the winner

I can only understand an NFL player holding out if he has been highly successful and/or a major contributor to a team's success. Deion Branch is a player that comes to mind. But these NFL rookies holding out like they've been in the NFL for 10 years is a disgrace. Imagine a rookie holding out and not even reporting for practice unless they get no less than 60 million dollars even though they haven't played a down in the NFL. There should be a minimum contract for rookies in the NFL just like in the NBA and MLB. Look at Jose Reyes for the Mets. Although he had great potential for the Mets, he didn't earn his millions until he started producing on the field. That's the way it should be. Money shouldn't be automatically granted to these rookies, it should be earned.
