a look at the sports week's biggest losers
by Christof

Welcome to the latest edition of the Friday Fryer, where we take a look at who was the sports' world's biggest idiot this week. It is again raining in my ‘hood, so movement via canoe is necessary. Nonetheless, I made it safely to higher ground. So now, without further ado, let's go take a look at our three finalists and, of course, the person or team who is being dipped into the Fryer....

THE FINALISTS
Penn State Football
On April 1, 2007, there was a brawl in a student apartment complex at State College, PA. State College is the location of the main campus of Penn State University. Six Penn St. football players: starting safety Anthony Scirrotto; defensive tackle Chris Baker; linebacker Jerome Hayes; cornerback Justin King; linebacker Tyrell Sales; and cornerback Lydell Sargeant were involved in this brawl. Today, they were charged for their actions.

Nice jobs, boys. You know, Penn St. has the talent to compete for a national championship this year. Sadly, these six will likely miss some game time as punishment for their stupidity on April 1. JoePa is not happy about this. The university is not happy about it.

The six of you let the school down, the team down, and yourselves down. And over what, a shouting match between a player’s girlfriend and some other student? Stupid. Stupid enough to have earned Penn State football a Friday Fryer nomination for this week.

Mark Prior
He was once a budding superstar with a golden arm for the Chicago Cubs. Now, he is a man whose career may be done at 26. Oh, how things can turn so quickly in the world of sports.

Back in 2003, Prior had a great year. Many expected it to be just the beginning, but now, it looks like it was the end. For the past 3 seasons, Prior has been hampered by injuries. This week, Prior’s 2007 season ended after he underwent major surgery on his pitching shoulder.

The legendary Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery on Prior. Dr. Andrew stated that although the surgery was major, he did not think this would end Prior’s career. Yes, Prior is only 26, however, after now 4 years of injury, one must now think that Prior is simply too fragile physically to ever come back and pitch in the majors again. But that is life, and life can be cruel.

New York Yankees
Wow, the Yankees do stink this year. It is not just the odor floating over from New Jersey. The Yankees are terrible. Three-fifths of their starting rotation has been on the DL at some point this season. Their ace closer has blown two saves, which directly resulted in two losses. Their overall record now is 8-12, placing them in dead last in the AL East division. The Yankees are also on a current six-game losing streak. Oh, how the might has fallen and fallen fast.

Really, the only bright spot the Yankees has had this season has been centered on the outstanding play of A-Rod. After that, and it is just plan ugly. Hence, the Yankees get another nomination for the Friday Fryer. Maybe next week, they get the chair!

AND THE LOSER IS . . .
New York Mets’ Fan Frank Martinez
In a first, the Fryer goes into the stands to grab the person who gets the chair this week. Frank Martinez, a Mets fan, attended a Mets v. Atlanta Braves game last weekend at Shea Stadium. During the bottom of the eighth inning of that game, Martinez got the bright idea to shine a flashlight at Braves pitcher Tim Hudson and shortstop Edgar Renteria. It seems like Martinez thought that by doing this, it would help the Mets come back in the game. I mean, being down 7-0, the fans need to have hope in something, right?

Anyway, Martinez actions were quickly discovered. He was immediately ejected from the stadium and was then charged with interfering with a professional sporting event and second-degree reckless endangerment. I didn’t even know that there was a crime for interfering with a professional sporting event on the books, so at least Frank taught me something.

Frank is facing a fine and possible jail time for this stunt. Personally, he should be subjected to a “best of” video highlighting the career of Armando Benitez. That, or may a constant video replay of the bottom of the ninth of game seven of the 2006 NLCS. Nonetheless, Frank Martinez gets the Chair this week for the Friday Fryer.

Until next Friday, AMF!

I don't know what's worse. Falling into the law of interfering with professional sports, or the fact that these laws exist in the first place. Who cares? Just get him out of the stadium and move on, it's no big deal.

The reason the law exists is because Calvin Klein (yes, the Calvin Klein) walked onto the court at MSG one day to yell at Latrell Sprewell.

You'd think Mr Klein would have more important things to worry about.

Whatever happened to the good old days when the cops would take the guy under the stands and beat the crap out of him and then just let him go?

And the loser of the week should be the a**hole who posted the website about kicking Bobby Orr out of the Hall of Fame. That guy defines stupid fan.
