Friars Beat West Virginia, Bubble for both?

9
Vote

The Providence College Friars (17-9, 7-6) beat #18 ranked West Virginia (20-7, 8-6) in a close Big East battle 64-61 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Sophomore guard Weyinmi Efejuku led the game with 24 points for Providence. So far this season, he has been the barometer for the team, as the Friars are 14-1 when he scores more than 13 points.

West Virginia took a 30-25 lead into the halftime, and jumped out to 7 point lead early in the second half. The Friars then went on a nice run to it up with 13 mins to go. Providence took the lead for good at the halfway mark, but West Virginia would not go away. However, they went cold from beyond the arc in the 2nd half, and couldn't make a move. West Virginia was lead by senior Frank Young (14 pts) and Darris Nichols (14 pts).

West Virgina took a whopping 41 three pointers, only connecting on 9.

After asking a question yesterday about if WV was a tourney lock, I think its clear they have to either beat Pitt or win a game or two in the Big East Tourney...WV offense did not impress me at all..they just stood around and waited for the 3 every time. However, their zone D was excellent.

Pean I was thinking about you once I saw that score this AM, and you are right. WVU has to get a win over Pitt, or now Im saying 2 wins in the Big East Tourney. Because last nights lsot will drop them from the top 25

Bubble will be a bursting for both of these clubs like Brady's five layers of protection broke with the Ex. Neither team is going dancing next month.

Come on Christof, let me have 5 mins of college basketball happiness!...its all i ask!...For PC its definitely a stretch, but they have 3 winnable games comming up..Cuse @ Home (I think home teams win about 20% of the time in the BEAST), SFU and SJ (who PC owns)

Providence needs to win out and then take at least two Big East Tournament games, that will give them 22 wins, pretty much a lock at that point. If they lose to either St Johns or South Florida the only way they get in is to win the Tournament. Bad loss for WVU, if they beat Pitt they're in, otherwise same boat as PC, at least two tourney wins.

PC is 16-2 at home and 1-7 on the road. I can see them beating Cuse at home, but unfortunately, I don't know if they can beat St. Johns in the Garden.

Should I reiterate the argument I made on this before? That is another loss to an TPI top 100 team. Especially after their RPi drops into the 60s when they lose to Pitt. Beating Cincy will not help them at all.

Yes, but winning two games in the BE Tourney would require them to beat a Pitt or GT. That would boost their RPI.

Beating Pitt or Georgetown ain't happening. I'm lucky enough due to my residence to see these bums on television quite regularly. They didn't belong on the same court as Pitt a week or so ago and Georgetown is far too skilled for them.

Agreed Tartan. I live in the heart of GT country and have watched that team mature into the team that the pollsters thought would be. Pitt is also a very talented team that can attack WVU on the defensive end on the court. THe only thing that saves WVU is any team that takes 41 tripples in a game has a chance to get hot and beat anyone that includes themselves
