Free Agency Ain't So Free

22

by Ron Sen, MD

"Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose." - Janis Joplin

Mike Lowell stands perched on the opportunity of a baseball lifetime, free agency after earning the MVP in the World Series. More power to him, I guess. I believe in the free market, and if I could do what Mike Lowell can do, then I'd have the right to choose how much money I'd make and who would pay me. Will he be happier in Philadelphia with fourteen million a year and four years? If he is, then that's his right, earned, by Curt Flood, Catfish Hunter, and Andy Messersmith.

Yes, I got to see those dinosaurs play, Hunter dishing out those comfortable 0 for 4s when baseball games lasted two and a half hours on a long day.

As for A-Rod, Mike Lupica has a really compelling article about A-Rod's zero for twenty-seven in the post season in the past few seasons with men on base. Signing A-Rod turns your team into a circus after your GM has become the puppet in Scott Boras' puppet show. Now I'm not saying Boras isn't the best at what he does. Look what he did for Barry Zito, today's contemporary Bill Lee, who won seventeen games thrice for Ye Olde Towne Team, when 'drug testing' meant something quite different to players.

I don't begrudge major league rookies more money than I can make as a doctor in a couple of years, because that's the market. If I wanted to move somewhere else and practice, I could probably make more money, but would that make me happier? And why should you care?

That is the point. Sports makes us care, fantasizing that we can go yard or get the two quick strikes busting the heat up and in, and then throw the disappearing slider on the outside corner. But we can't, so we watch Big Papi and Lowell deliver in the clutch, Josh Beckett become OUR Bob Gibson, and Jacoby Ellsbury conjure up images of Lou Brock torching the Sox on the bases in 1967.

So you probably don't remember those days, hearing of Jose Santiago's homerun in the series, Yaz drilling two, or Lonborg tossing a one-hitter against the mighty Cards. But you'll tell your grandchildren about how J.D. Drew hit the grandest slam of his life when it mattered, and when Jon Lester came back from cancer to clinch the World Series in Game four. And no one, not A-Rod, or Scott Boras, or Sam Levinson can take those memories from you.

Scott Boras can take Prince Fielder away from me in a few years, and I'm still not too happy about that.

I hate to say it Corey...but that is a fact...

I think you'll see the Brewers go the way of the Mariners based on this...that is to say, now that they've proven to be a respectable club, they'll get more fans, make more money and spend more....but they'll never be able to acquire or keep the top fleet talent like typical Boras players....

and that sucks...

Scott Boris is a shmuck. But his job is to get the most money for his clients. Really the only one that can take Prince Fielder away from the BrewCrew is Prince Fielder. I don't know how many millions some of these guys need to "survive". (Example ARod) The nicest contract I ever saw was when Andre Dawson was a free agent from the Montreal Expos. He wanted to play in Chicago because "He liked the natural grass, and his knees were in such bad shape from playing on the green concrete up in Montreal". He presented Chicago a blank check and said "You fill in the amount I want to play here" They took care of him and he did prosper. I am certain that Prince Fielder could be successfull in Milwaukee for the rest of his career, but it will be up to him.

If Boras' opt out strategy with ARod fails, and he has to go crawling back to the Yankees for one year and 9 million, then Boras' credibility with baseball will be zero. He'll be lucky if he can negotiate an extra ketchup packet at McDonald's. As much as I hate the thought of ARod being a Yankee for another year, the fact Boras would be done in baseball makes me very happy.

This is really the yankees don't want him...Boras cost them 20 or 30 mil...i mean, the yankees could have easily (relatively) reupped A-Rod to even 35 mil via an extension, but thanks to his opt-out it'll cost the yanks all 35 mil a year versus the old deal where Texas was paying for a very large chunk of it... If i were the yanks, i'd be pissed too

At the age of 63 I remember well the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series. Yaz was the kind of player that did his talking on the field and didn't see his name in police reports. It was sad to see Lonborg go 22-9 in 1967 then after a skiing accident if my memory is correct he was 13-21 over the next two seasons with Red Sox.

I have often trashed J.D. Drew this season for his lousy regular season while making $14 million but do give him credit for his hitting in the World Series.

For the last time...read the writing on the wall...

Mike Lowell isn't gonna be in Philly...

They've stated 2 things: 1) They're focusing on pitching

2) They've got about 15 mil to spend...which they'd rather spend on rowand...but...they need pitching

the only people who seemed convinced of Philly's interest in Lowell is Boston...it isn't gonna happen!

Where will he end up...

New York...

The OLD Yankees (of the King Georege Era) would have already signed lowell to a 4 year $60M contract. This yankees team won't sign him at all. He may go elsewhere, but not to NY.

Phillies don't really need any offense and like JuTMSY4 has said before the combo of Glenn Dobbs and Wes Helms is OK and may be even better next season. 13 pitchers started games for Phillies last season. Kendrick should be their No. 3 starter because of his 10-4 record with 3.87 ERA.

Correct...the Lidge move, assuming Lidge is competent, was pretty good...gives them Hamels, Myers, Kendrick at the top with Moyer and...ugh..Adam Eaton at the bottom...Moyer is a lot better than his numbers and if you look at the last game of the season, its clear that he's a guy you can count on...you know what you're getting with Moyer...and their offense is solid enough to overcome it... dropping 10 mil on a guy like Carlos Silva suggests that the Phils aren't going to be shopping for a "top flight" starter but rather a middle reliever and possibly a bench bat...

and greg dobbs is a lot better than people think...Helms had a down year...

Obviously, I'd love to see Lowell there...but the Phillies aren't going to throw away the couple mil they dropped on Helms to add another Bat...which isn't terribly important for the phils...

to me, its worth the gamble...

That and Miggy Cabrera should be available at the trade deadline a little bit cheaper (you heard it here first!!)

Moyer had a 14-12 record but had a 5.01 ERA and Eaton was 10-10 with an astronomical ERA of 6.29 so they shouldn't be starting ahead of Kendrick.

Eaton is terrible and may actually start the year on the DL...I'd like to see them add a starter but I don't see where

The guy to keep an eye on his AA Reading pitcher Carlos Carrasco...he may be in the majors by May or June depending on how things shake out...and based on what i've heard...

Hamels-Myers-Kendrick-Carrasco-Moyer should be incredibly solid...

On that note, Moyer may start ahead of Kendrick because he's a lefty...just a thought though

Carrasco's numbers were down in 2007 compared to his numbers in A ball when he gave up only 103 hits in 159 innings in 2006. In AA last year with Reading he gave up 65 hits in 70 innings while striking out 49 and walking 46. In A ball this year he had walked 22 in 69 innings so did better before being promoted. Still see no reason why he can't be in majors sometime next year. He was 6-14 his first two years in minors but has been 24-12 since then.

Nice article. Boras loses in the long run. A-rod would sign with Boston for less than $30M for a shot at the WS, but Boras would not let that happen because it will cost him 4% of the $5m-$10m difference. I don't want A-rod but if he pulled a "Moss" I'd be fine with it after a night or two of tears.
