Freddy Adu about to get "Real"

10
Vote

In a surprising move, Freddy Adu will be leaving the confines of the nation's capital. DC United and Real Salt Lake announced a trade yesterday that will send the much-hyped player to Utah. Adu was traded along with goalkeeper Nick Rimando to Salt Lake. In return, DC United will recieve goalkeeper Jay Nolly, a designated player slot, and other considerations including a share of any transfer fee RSL picks up for Adu.

To say the least, this trade is intriguing. Adu turns 18 in June, in which time he'll likely be a target for European clubs. He's already garnered interest, as Manchester United invited Adu on a two-week trial in November, where he trained with the English giants. RSL is likely to not hang onto him for very long, and will get a good chunk of money out of this deal. The big question remains: What does DC United have up its sleeve with a second player designation? Are there a few big names wanting to wear Black and Red?

For the uninitiated, the designation will allow a team to sign a player for as much as they please, and only a pre-determined amount will cost against the salary cap. Each team has one, but it can be traded, as United and the New York Red Bulls have already done.

This trade is not suprising at all. DC United and Adu have hinted that this trade may happen for a while now. Adu has open displayed his anger with the United and the way they used his talents. It was smart for DC to get rid of him now via trade and get something in return for him, rather than waiting till the end of next season and lose him via free agnentcy.

It's not really "free agency." Adu couldn't be transferred to European clubs until he turned 18. RSL is going to lose him to in July (when transfer windows open), but since he is on their roster they'll get the largest cut from the transfer (MLS owns all the players and thus recieves transfer fees from the team that buys a player. It is then distributed amongst the teams). DC really didn't recieve anything tangible out of Adu, since they swapped backup goalkeepers. Adu will be happier in SL for the short time he is there, since he did not get along with Nowak.

When his contract was up, I was under the impression he could move to another MLS team.

You wouldn't be the first. Frankly, I had to think for a while before figuring out how to respond.

Fair enough I wont lie I am not a big soccer person, and what I do know and understand is more on the international scene rather than the MLS.

His contract has a team option in '09, so he's under contract for awhile, unless he gets sold.

I do agree though, that Adu game them vitrually nothing while in DC 11 goals in 87 games. In SL he can get the clock he wants.

And more importantly the position. DC was stacked at the attacking midfield position, that is more natural for Adu, so they played him out of position at right mid, which was idiotic. Adu is a lefty, and has trouble with righty crosses, so he was severely hampered out there; he also had to spend a lot of time tracking back on D since DC only plays three guys across their back line.

Adu will end up going to somewhere in Europe, probably not Man U or Chelsea - he would never get a game. If he went somewhere middle of the FA Premier League, e.g. it would give him the experience he needs. I think this was a good deal. A European team will probably buy him off them in the summer (under FIFA rules), and DC United would get nothing. Accordingly, Salt Lake will get nothing (other than money) for him. So this was a good deal for DC. Under FIFA rules, there is no such thing as a trade for contracted players, so a team could just buy him off them and if Adu/his agent agreed, there is nothing a team can really do. So well done to New York on that count. That's why the "trade" had such little weight.

Thats true. Adu will end up in Europe, not sure he will make a top level EPL squad though. Everyone knows he is just counting his days till he can leave the US to play overseas.

Of course, any deals between MLS and the outside soccer world are transfers. However, anything in MLS is a trade; there is no such deal where players go to a new team for money, they must be traded for something, be it another player, a draft pick, or as we've recently seen a designated player spot.

C'mon that's not really fair. Exactly how many 18 yr olds have made their EPL debuts at Chelsea, ManU? Besides Ronaldo, just about everyone starts out at a smaller club where they demonstrate that they can handle the league.

Just some things to points out... DC United will get a small portion of Adu's transfer fee if/when he leaves the MLS. I can't track down the %, but they'll get some take when Adu is finally sold. Also, I think his performance in the U-20 World Cup (assuming the US qualifies) will go a long way to dictating which clubs pursue Adu. This will be his third U-20 World Cup, and he'll be competing against the world's brightest and best; if he excells a big club may make a swoop for him, although he won't be guarenteed PT then.

That should not be a problem, as the US is great about qualifying for youth tournaments (the strength of our system is youth soccer, unfortunately something gets lost along the way).

Yah, that always confuses me. I don't understand why it doesn't translate to the senior squad
