Freddy Adu - Thoughts on Benfica

by Ryno

Thursday evening’s MLS broadcast on ESPN featured an interesting report during halftime of the New England v. Kansas City Match up. Freddy Adu was interviewed in regards to his move from the US to Portugal and his signing with Benfica.

The thing that was most interesting is that Freddy very plainly stated his two reasons for making the jump to Europe. The first was that if he did decide to move to Europe, he wanted it to be with a big club. The second was he wanted to play consistently in UEFA Champions League games, year in and year out.

Which presents a new set of questions for the American fan still learning the history and tradition of the European and British club football scene…does Benfica address Adu’s two main concerns properly or was he playing to the camera? Clearly, BWINLIGA is a smaller league with Lisbon and Porto providing the only real competition. So is this league and is this club right for him?

Benfica is a logic step for Freddie. They're on par with Lisbon and competitive against Porto, and have a legitimate chance at paticipating in the Champions League or UEFA Cup competitions every year. Also, at this point in his career, with only MLS experience under his belt, Adu would have either ridden the bench or been terribly overmatched had he joined a top English or Spanish team. His career needs to progress in stages, and I think this is an excellent scenario for him.

It's hard to say. Benfica ar an ambitious club with a long history and a great city rivalry with Porto. Because of the strength--or lack thereof--of the Portugese league, he should be able to play in either the Champions League or UEFA cup. He's going to have to work hard to get in the side and make sure he stays there when he play in Europe so that he can be seen by the big european clubs. If he does that he should have a nice future ahead of him.

I wasn't sure about the remaining talent left for Lisbon, but I'm almost certain that Porto has to take a step backward because of Liverpool swooping up Torres

Torres played for Atletico Madrid. However, they did lose Anderson and Nani to Man Utd.
