Born on June 5, 1878 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Fred Mitchell (Frederick Francis Mitchell) played for the Boston Americans, Philadelphia Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Superbas and New York Highlanders over the course of his 6 year career. Mitchell broke into the bigs on April 27, 1901 with the Boston Americans, and put up a 3.81 ERA in 108.2 innings pitched in 1901, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Fred Mitchell's best season was 1903, when he posted a 4.48 ERA, won 11 games and struck out 69 batters.
