Fred McGriff was a solid, yet unspectacular player from 1987-2004. He won a World Series ring with the Atlanta Braves in 1995, and played in 50 career playoff games. He played the game with passion and fell seven HR short of the coveted 500 HR milestone.
Why should McGriff be in the Hall of Fame? What will keep him out? Discuss:
Reasons McGriff Should Be In The Hall of Fame
1. His 493 HR rank 21st on the all-time list.
2. He's a career .303 postseason hitter with 10 HR in 50 games
3. He played in five All-Star games and was the MVP of the 1994 game.
4. His 958 extra base hits ranks 33rd all-time.
5. He ranks 35th on the all-time list in RBI and 34th in walks.
Reasons McGriff Should Not Make The Hall of Fame
1. He won 0 gold gloves and wasn't known as a defensive player.
2. His 1882 strikeouts rank 7th all-time.
3. He surpassed 167 hits in a season only once.
4. He finished higher than 5th in MVP voting only once.
5. He never had more than 37 HR or 107 RBI in a single season.
Moral of the story is that Fred McGriff is not a Hall of Fame player. He was an outstanding hitter for several years, and has nice career totals, but not enough for Cooperstown to come calling.
