Fred McGriff -- In or Out?

10
Vote

by user Joebook

Fred McGriff was a solid, yet unspectacular player from 1987-2004. He won a World Series ring with the Atlanta Braves in 1995, and played in 50 career playoff games. He played the game with passion and fell seven HR short of the coveted 500 HR milestone.

Why should McGriff be in the Hall of Fame? What will keep him out? Discuss:

Reasons McGriff Should Be In The Hall of Fame

1. His 493 HR rank 21st on the all-time list.

2. He's a career .303 postseason hitter with 10 HR in 50 games

3. He played in five All-Star games and was the MVP of the 1994 game.

4. His 958 extra base hits ranks 33rd all-time.

5. He ranks 35th on the all-time list in RBI and 34th in walks.

Reasons McGriff Should Not Make The Hall of Fame

1. He won 0 gold gloves and wasn't known as a defensive player.

2. His 1882 strikeouts rank 7th all-time.

3. He surpassed 167 hits in a season only once.

4. He finished higher than 5th in MVP voting only once.

5. He never had more than 37 HR or 107 RBI in a single season.

Moral of the story is that Fred McGriff is not a Hall of Fame player. He was an outstanding hitter for several years, and has nice career totals, but not enough for Cooperstown to come calling.

I don't know. It's hard to leave out a guy that is top 35 in RBI, extra base hits, and home runs.

That, and he is spokesman for one of the (if not THE) longest running commercials of all-time.

Andre Dawson: 32nd in HR, 28th in RBI, 21st in XBH --- plus 7 Gold Gloves and 314 SB. That's a real crime.

I don't think he's in, but if he makes it, he goes in as part of Team Emanski.

I'll always remember Crime Dog as a Dodger (or as property of the Yankees!) He's already made it known he'd go in as a Devil Ray (he's from Tampa)

Manny, the player does not get to choose anymore what team he goes in on.

They can choose, but the committee can deny their request (as they did to Boggs who wanted to go in a Devil Ray) I think they'd oblige with McGriff

make a list of all the guys that led both leagues in homers;

Also, he was a very good fielder who happened to play when a lot of excellent 1st basemen played; Mattingly, Grace, Snow

ironically his HoF Monitor number is exactly 100.0 (a likely HoFer is >100)

The monitor is hard to go by. Jim Rice is somewhere in the 130s, and guys that didn't play in the playoffs get penalized.

I just thought it was ironic... I could care less about numbers, when it comes to baseball... baseball is played on grass, not calculators numbers only tell you exactly what you want them to... there are manny variables in baseball that turn numbers into apples and triangles

manny has a streak of his own: seventeen consecutive articles in which he posted a fanbox in a comment!

I agree, McGriff had a nice run from 88-92 and played until he was 40, but cannot be considered an all-time great.

88-92 - when 35-36 HRs could lead the LEAGUE!!! Keep things in perspective!

good point. for a player of his time, he was one of the best. also, it was a time when 15 homeruns at the break would land yourself in the hr derby!
