Born on May 15, 1852 in New Haven, Connecticut, Fred Goldsmith (Fredrick Ernest Goldsmith) played for the New Haven Elm Citys, Troy Trojans, Chicago White Stockings and Baltimore Orioles over the course of his 7 year career. Goldsmith broke into the bigs on October 23, 1875 with the New Haven Elm Citys, and put up a 1.57 ERA in 63 innings pitched in 1879, his rookie year.

Most people believe that Fred Goldsmith's best season was 1882, when he posted a 2.42 ERA, won 28 games and struck out 109 batters.
