Born on June 28, 1936 in Flat Rock, Michigan, Fred Gladding (Fred Earl Gladding) played for the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros over the course of his 13 year career. Gladding broke into the bigs on July 1, 1961 with the Detroit Tigers, and put up a 3.07 ERA in 67.1 innings pitched in 1964, his rookie year.

There is some disagreement on what was Fred Gladding's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1969, when he posted a 4.21 ERA and notched 29 saves. However, others believe that it was 1967, when he posted a 1.99 ERA, notched 12 saves and struck out 64 batters.
