Fred Clarke (Fred Clifford Clarke) was born on October 3, 1872 in Winterset, Iowa. He made his Major League debut on June 30, 1894 for the Louisville Colonels. In 1894, his rookie year, he hit .268 with 7 home runs and 48 RBI. Clarke played for the Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates over the course of his 20 year career.

Most people believe that Fred Clarke's best season was 1897, when he stole 57 bases, hit for a .390 average and knocked in 67 runs.
