Toronto Blue Jays' Fank Thomas belted his ninth home run this season, which is not only inching him closer to being the 21st player to enter the 500 home run club, but that home run broke the record that Seattle Mariners' Edgar Martinez set for the most home runs hit by a designated hitter. Frank Thomas hit this home run in the third inning with no one on base. Thomas is also eight home runs shy of tying Eddie Murray for 20th place for the most home runs hit in a career.
The blast, which is Thomas's ninth of the season and 496th of his career, came on the first pitch he saw from Washington left-hander Micah Bowie. The Nationals southpaw became the 321st pitcher to yield a home run to the Big Hurt, who sent the offering hurtling into the second deck in left field at Rogers Centre.
