Francis F. Sinkwich, born on October 10, 1920 in McKees Rock, Penn., was a Heisman Trophy winner in 1942 and NFL MVP with the Detroit Lions in 1944.
Sinkwich played for the University of Georgia, where he rushed for 2,271 yards and passed for another 2,331, while scoring 30 touchdowns in his three-year collegiate career. He led the Bulldogs to an 11-1 season in 1942 and a win over UCLA in the Rose Bowl.
Sinkwich became an All-Pro with the Lions in 1943 and 1944, but a knee injury in 1945 forced him to retire from the NFL, although he did attempt a comeback in the All-American Football Conference in 1946. He was named to the College Hall of Fame in 1954.
