When I played high school football, Frank LoVuolo coached a rival team in the same city, Binghamton, NY. He coached at Central High, I played for North High. At that time Ernie Davis played for Elmira Free Academy in our conference. Elmira Free Academy was ranked first in New York State at that time. Frank LoVuolo told me that every time Ernie Davis is going to run with the ball, he points his foot in that direction. Sure enough, the first time he got the ball he pointed his foot, and I went to the direction he was headed and tackled him behind the line of scrimmage just as he was getting the ball and he fumbled. The ball went rolling and we were coached not to be a hero, just cover the fumble and I did. Later I determined nobody was around and I could have taken it in for a touchdown. We ended up losing 6-0."
Frank LoVuolo was not only a good coach, he had an amazing ability to pick out details such as the Ernie Davis story above in order to help players and the teams he coached.
