[edit] Biography

Frank "Hondo" Howard (Frank Oliver Howard) was born on August 8, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio. He made his Major League debut on September 10, 1958 for the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1960, he hit .268 with 23 home runs and 77 RBI and won Rookie Of The Year honors. Howard played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Washington Senators, Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers over the course of his 16 year career.

Frank "The Capital Punisher" Howard entered the majors as an amatuer free agent in 1958. He was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and played 7 seasons with the team, including 1963, the year the Dodgers won the World Series. In 1964, Howard was traded to the Washington Senators along with Ken McMullen, Phil Ortega, Pete Richert, and Dick Nen (player to be named later) for Claude Osteen, John Kennedy, and cash ($100,000). Howard played seven seasons with the Senators, and earning that Capital Punisher nickname for his great home-run power (to the upper deck, those white seats in the upper deck at RFK Stadium mark the locations of Howard's home-run hits). "Hondo" Howard hit 44 home-runs two times with the Senators, and both years that number was the most home-runs hit in the majors (1968 & 1970). His high, though, came in 1969 when he hit 48 home-runs and came in second to Harmon Killebrew 49 home-runs. Howard landed on many stat lists, including hitting 126 RBI's in 1970 (the most that year), walking 132 times in 1970 (most that year), managing to get a slugging percentage of .552 in 1968 (highest percentage that year), acquirng the most total bases in 1968 and 1969 in the majors (330 & 340), hitting the most extra-base hits in 1968 (75), hitting a home-run every 13.6 at-bats - the best mark in 1968, drawing 29 & 20 IBB in 1970-1971 (most in the majors), and striking out 155 times in 1967, along with grounding into 29 double plays in both 1969 & 1971 (both stats the most in the majors for that year).

Frank Howard also briefly managed in the majors. Howard managed the San Diego Padres to a record of 43-69 in 1981, and managed the New York Mets to a record of 52-64 in 1983. Howard ended up with a record of 93-133 as a manager in 226 managed games.

Most people believe that Frank Howard's best season was 1969, when he slugged 48 home runs, hit for a .296 average and knocked in 111 runs.
