Foulke turns down 2007 option

9
Vote

Apparently in a desire to play closer to home, RHP Keith Foulke turned down a $3.75 million player option to stay with the Boston Red Sox through the 2007 season. The Red Sox had already declined their team option on Foulke, which would have given Foulke an additional $1.5 million had he chosen to stay, for a total 2007 salary of $5.25 million.

Foulke enters the free-agent market after a series of injury-plagued seasons following his 2004 success that helped bring a World Series championship to the team. As a free agent he will likely command far less than the $5.25 million he could have received in Boston.

Why would he decline this option? If he can't make as much money and the Sox will likely need a closer with Papelbon moving to the starting rotations . . . isn't that an ideal situation for Foulke?

Who knows, but it's good for Boston, they can free up that money and maybe actually rebuild their bullpen a little.

I think he's thinking long-term. Take a $2m/1yr or $5m/2yr contract elsewhere, get back in a groove, and take larger money later.

Foulke must have bought a home somewhere other than his birthplace, because he's not going to find anything that close to South Dakota. Does anyone know what city Foulke calls home?

I think he lives in Arizona these days. Watch out, Diamondbacks fans. Though, here's a great idea for a reality series: Two former South Dakotans turned New England sports heroes turned former New England athletes sharing a place in hopping Sioux Falls. That's right, it's the Vinatieri-Foulke show!

Sorry, that was not nice. I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I don't think anyone cares if it was or wasn't nice. People only get offended when it isn't funny.

How about, "Don't mess with Texas, our football team is overrated!"

That was not nice, and not funny, and not on topic. If you want to come out of your AF shell and have a showdown about what Texas might have done on Saturday if our QB hadn't been injured on the first drive, I'd be more than happy. Until then, leave me the hell alone.

I could see the yanks making a play at foulke and as a yanks fan, not sure what I think. He's got to be better than farnsworth, right?

I think the Big East has some pretty fine football this year. They have 3 of the Top 10 teams. and BCS computers have Rutgers at number 2. haha. As far as foulke, that guy can't handle or doesn't want to handle the pressure anymore. why would he be a good fit in New York? sorry, we have enough relievers, don't need him.
