by user Phoenix Superfan

The former Nascar President and son of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. passed away around 1 PM Eastern Time today. Further details are not known. France Jr. is largely considered to be the man most responsible for brining NASCAR to the prominence that it enjoys today. He was 74.

Bill France, Jr. (not Sr., as posted above) had been suffering from cancer since 1999 and gave control of NASCAR to his son Brian after the 2003 season. NASCAR saw tremendous nationwide -- and worldwide -- growth under Bill's guidance. He was responsible for the first flag-to-flag national broadcast of a race (the 1979 Daytona 500, which ended in a fist-fight between Cale Yarborough and the Allison brothers) and he saw the formation of both the NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series. Bill also forsaw the formation of several lucrative TV contracts, which put Cup races on national broadcast and cable television. He expanded NASCAR from the rural southeast to all over the country, and though his father created the sport on the sands of Daytona Beach, Bill Jr. is really the one responsible for the NASCAR so many Americans know and love (or at least tolerate) today. A sad day for American motorsports. Bill Jr. will be missed. Say hi to Benny Parsons for us ...

Ignore the Sr.-Jr. correction I made above. I misread the original post. Sorry. :)

When Toyota cars start regularly winning, he'll be turning over in his grave. But only to the left.

Aren't Toyotas actually made "more of" in america than Fords (mexico)? Isn't the rule that it needs to be "assembled" in the US? - I don't know

Yeah, the Camry is manufactured in Kentucky, while the Monte Carlo (Chevy), Fusion (Ford) and Charger (Dodge) are all either made in Mexico or Canada. But don't tell your average NASCAR fan that; they don't like to be burdened with facts.

Yeah...something about the parts being made in the US, but assembled in mexico, i don't know the exact rules, but its entertaining because Toyota is just smarter...

They moved production to the US for one good reason, and not because of NASCAR...

It was cheaper to manufacture (yes, believe it or not) in the US and they could also avoid tariffs and some quotas...very intelligent move...
