The Year of the Big Lie in sports continues as Marion Jones, who won 5 medals in the 2000 Olympics, will finally admit in federal court what most people have already assumed - that she lied to federal prosecutors and she knowingly took the performance enhancing drugs from BALCO, now infamously known as “the clear” and “the cream” during her Olympic run.
Really, this news should not be all that shocking other than making Victor Conte sound more like Jose Canseco. There were whispers that she was on something by opponents as she was blowing them out of the water in meets. Even when she had her Palmiero speech back in 2004, it just didn’t ring true since everyone around her, from her coach to her ex-husband to her baby daddy, all were at least investigated for PEDs with two of them busted. Her positive test in 2006 (although rendered null due to a negative B sample) added more fuel to the steroids fire. Then when you remember her steep dropoff in performance afterwards, the possibility of drug use was not only conceivable but almost a lock.
Obviously, this admission totally takes the luster off of her entire career. Definitely, Jones should have her medals stripped from her but this situation opens a big can of worms. Who else in the Olympics back in 2000 were on either one of these non-detectable drugs? (And I’m not talking about just the USA; although a case can be made that we can score the best drugs.) Does this call all of the Sydney games into question? Will the Feds go after others who were associated with this circle of PED use?
But one question was answered by a lawyer who is very knowledgeable with this case. When he was asked about the status of the Barry Bonds case, otherwise known as the Holy Grail of Steroid Abuse, he stated:
"He's next," the lawyer said.
