Forget the H, This season Jack McCallum of Sports Illustrated says it is all about The O'Brien

Sports Illustrated recently published an article by Jack McCallum calling out the award that used to be...the heisman. I no longer capitalize it, I don't know whether to call it the Nissan Heisman, the New York Heisman, the Titan Heisman or maybe the OVERRATED heisman. I am tired of the award getting so much publicity throughout the college football season that people actually forget about the true meaning of the college football award itself; to honor players for exceptional ability as student athletes...not to honor the player with the best smile, the best record or the most air time on ESPN.
The O'Brien has it right. For more thna 30 years they ahve been giving an award to a quarterback with exceptional ability, academics and character. This award is the only award to actually require their voters to make choices based on leadership and character while also considering their athletic ability as well.
Even one more point for you. 22% of O'Brien winners have gone on to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft; guess what...the little Heisman, only about 17%. I thought this award was supposed to go to a super talented individual???
Well this season The O'Brien has instituted a Fan Vote. It is great, I actually vote everyday and am taking a little bit of ownership in nominating my QB of choice. Its fun for me, because my vote actually counts. I used to vote for the Heisman but then relaized my vote counts, in collaboration with every other person that votes, for less than a 100th of a percent. The O'Brien, well it counts for 5% of the total vote.
All I am saying is, I am happy The O'Brien is getting picked up. I hvae made it a goal of mine, just like Jack McCallum from SI to ensure that this season I write as much as I can about the Best Darn QB Award in the land.
GREAT SI ARTICLE
