For the Phillies, the Time is Now

From my blog, The Lazy Athlete

For four and a half months, you've heard one statement coming out of Philadelphia more than any other: "The season is still young; we gotta take it one game at a time." Well, that mantra no longer applies. Granted, they still must take things one game at a time, but the season is no longer young. With 39 games remaining, and the team trailing the first place Mets by five games, the Phillies need to make a move. And what better time to start than with the upcoming 10-game homestand against 3 playoff contenders; two of which they are currently chasing (Padres and Mets).

A lot of people don't want to here it, but the Phillies have done a tremendous job just being in this position considering all of the injuries they have suffered. Whoever you want to blame for lack of quality pitching and depth in the field, it can't be denied that the players have played to their utmost potential. Unfortunately there comes a time when "close but no cigar," doesn't work anymore.

The Phillies have been in this position before. Last season, they hung around in August and September only to miss the playoff by three games. Two season ago, they missed the playoffs by just one game. If the season ended today, they'd miss the playoffs by one game again. Thankfully, it does not end today.

The next three games are against the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers are really struggling right now, but with a staff capable of shutting teams down at any moment, the Phillies need to bring their A-game. Especially considering the next two opponents: three against the Padres and four against the Mets. There is not much of a bigger opportunity than facing the team you're trailing by one game at home for a three game series. As for the Mets, if you can't get up for this series, you are not a fan of baseball. The only way this four game series could be any more important (short of the playoffs) is if it took place in mid-September. So what is "acceptable," to put it in the words of Phil's GM Pat Gillick, for this homestand? Normally, I think you'd be happy with a 6-4 record against these three teams. But considering the ground the Phils have to make up, and the amount of time they have to do it, 7-3 needs to be the minimum goal. And those three losses can't come at the hands of the Mets or the Phils can pretty much kiss the division goodbye.

7-3 will be difficult without Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, and Michael Bourn, to name three D.L. residents. But, it is time to put those injuries aside if the Phillies want to make the playoffs. It is time to stop patting their backs for hanging in there despite the adversity they've faced. If you're looking for the perfect time to make a move, the time is now.

Dude, I am a Phillies fan.

The time is not now. It WAS.

Now is the time for the EAGLES!

Oh, I agree that now is Eagles time and I am so ready for football to start. But, I still am into baseball now that the pennant races are heating up

Phils were up 4-0 going into the bottom of the 7th. That inning ended with the Phils down 7-4. The opponent? The Pirates. This season is official dead. Stick a fork in the Phillies pitching staff.

"Now is the time for the EAGLES!" Wait, didn't you just say in my article about the Eagles that the time isn't now nor never? Did my incredibly awesome article change your viewpoint? :-)

You can't call the season after one game dude. There have been about a dozen instances this season where they could've thrown in the towel. But they haven't They're five back of the mets with seven games left against them. And they're only a game back of the Wild Card. As bad as that last game was, they are still right there in the thick of the race.

Have you watched the Phillies the last 5-6 years? If you have, you would have thrown in the towell a long time ago. Like when they once again started the season terribly.

You see BBerg...chris is just willing to write off the season because if he tries to get into it, he'll get crushed...but if he doesn't then he can just say "I told you so." Either way, he "wins" i suppose

Hell...i hate the management, i'm becoming less and less of a gillick fan by the day (still better than wade)...but i like the team...that everyday lineup is awesome and full of great players...I'll drink the koolaid like i do every year...

I have a feeling they'l for 4-2 against the NL west series...take 3 of 4 from the mets and then fall flat on their face against Florida and Atlanta...that's how it always works

Hey Jut:

Did you hear about Ed Wade. He went skydiving last week in NJ. Got caught in the tree. They had to get help to get him down.

Would love the see the video of him stuck in the tree. Lucky it was not known at the time. I am sure quite a few Phillies fans would have helped out, with flaming torches.

What will derail the Phils is what will kill a lot of playoff contenders in the next two or three weeks: lack of decent starting pitching. Outside of Hamels, and probably Moyer, who do they have? Adam Eaton? The guy has been a bust. Kyle Lohse? When Cincinnati trades a starter, there probably is a good reason. I don't know enough about Kendrick and/or Durbin to say much about them, but odds are they are too green to hold up in a pennant race.

The Phillies are either going to take the Wild card or they will once again be out of the playoffs. I don't see them catching the Mets, especially when Pedro gets called up to the roster. Losing Chase Utley killed us. When that happened my first thought was, "The Eagles start training camp soon right?" And I think I'm depressed in Florida not being able to see the games. I can't imagine what I'll do when I see them blow a 4 run lead to the Pirates in person when I move back.
