Football is stupid

See: The end of the Cardinals - Rams game. Pure haberdashery...

I won't even get into the back to back fumbled snaps by the QBs with 2 minutes left...

4th quarter, Rams ball up 2 points, 4th down and long, 5 seconds left...

Rams punt, Cards player fair catches with :00 left

Refs: Offsides, Cardinals

Rams: We decline the penalty

Announcers: Well the game can't end on a penalty

Confusion, people on the field

Announcer/former player/rulebook enthusiast Ron Woofley: When you fair catch a punt with no time left you get a free kick if you're behind..

ME: OK, we get to see a free kick! How often does THAT happen... Can Rackers drop kick at all?

Refs: Cardinals get a free kick from the spot of the fair catch (Rackers warms up to attempt a 74 yard free kick)

Rams: Ok, Uhh... we un-decline the penalty

Refs: Well then you get a free play with no time left (and they down the ball) Game Over

Me: WHAT? (Shakes head) What?

My wife: (Who wants to try being a Cards fan, almost became a fan after a VERY drama filled and exciting 4th quarter) "that is why Football is stupid"

I agree:

How can you un-decline a penalty and if you DO un-decline the penalty, WHY wouldn't they put time BACK on the clock??

I men this kind of stuff routinely happens to the Cardinals, so I don't care so much that they lost... but what kind of ruling is this?

God, I love baseball...

you'll see the lowlights tonight on ESPN... ridiculousness

Many of the rules are retarded, this was just another case. It went from being drama filled to lobotomy initiating...

If this kind of thing happened in a playoff game or Super Bowl between 2 teams people gave a crap about, there would be outrage and depending on the cities involved, riots...

I don't get it. So Arizona could have had a 74-yard field goal attempt. They wouldn't have scored anyway, too far out...

When you fair catch a punt with no time left you get a free kick if you're behind? i did not know that. shouldn't the game just end? so the nfl will make it so that db's must play nice with wr's, yet they have ridiculous rules like getting a free kick. wow.

The AP said nothing about this...

It was crazy! People were all over the field, players were in the locker room... utter madness, the the refs announced the free kick, then MORE confusion abounded...

Anyway, if you're ahead it wouldn't matter. But yeah, you get a free kick (from the ole' days of dropkicking) apparently, Rackers could kick it from a tee? I guess?? ... he was practicing it like a kickoff, running start and all!

They were setting up to do it and the refs let the Rams un-decline the penalty, then said they got to do 4th down over again, but there was no time on the clock???

Ron Woofley (ex-Card badass) is awesome! The other announcers all sounded like dumbasses trying to figure it out, Wolf steps up and calmly explained it in detail then said something along the lines "you guys should really read the rulebook sometime" in his sarcastic way. He does a radio show here in town and he puts down stupid callers in such an effortless manner it's hilarious, yet demeaning without sounding like an a-hole. Of course it helps that his voice sounds like he could tear your head off like a bottlecap...

If Kurt Warner can't hold on to a snap, then the Cards don't deserve to win. But then again, the Rams didn't deserve it either...

the only reason they got the ball was because the Rams fumbled the snap when all they had to do was get a first down...

I didn't even bring up right before the 2 minute warning on 3rd and long, the Torry Holt non-catch/interception that wasn't overturned after replay - Holt was on the sideline and you could read his face - he KNEW he didn't catch it, the D-Back did and he was slumped and kicking the dirt in disgust for NOT catching the ball, then they said it was a catch anyway!!! Just a whole mess of unbelievable isht... entertaining, but it left me shaking my head that football has too many very dumb rules. Free play with no time left AFTER a play that was essentially ruled dead.

Almost makes me want to become a soccer fan...

a minus for that? Not that I care about minuses... what was minus worthy there??

I'm not saying he would have made it, just had a chance.

It's 10 yards short of a kickoff and I've seen kickers (Including Rackers) put kickoffs through the uprights before...

That has got to be one of the most asanine rules I've ever read, but not nearly as asanine as the officials letting the Rams un-decline the penalty after they'd already declined it. Sounds to me like the officials didn't know the rule, either. "Oh, the Cardinals get a free kick? Guess we better let the Rams know, see if they still want to decline the penalty...[Carlos Mencia]dee dee dee![/Carlos Mencia]"

Here's an idea to change the rule - fair catch with no time left should be end of game period. If you are daft enough to catch it for no return, then that should be the end of the game. No time left, finito.

However, if there is a penalty for something, the Rams should have been able to decline the penalty and end the game. If the situation was reversed, and the Rams committed a penalty, the Cardinals should have had the option of having one more play with 0 seconds on the clock.

My rule reagarding rules: Whenever it confuses people, it's a bad rule.

Also, a drop kick will not go as far as a kick off the floor. Rugby shows us that a place kick can be scored from 50-60 yards max, whereas a drop kick is only likely to be 40 yards, and the accuracy is severely reduced. So Rackers would have had no chance.

That might not sound like far in comparison to American Football, but remember a rugby ball is heavier, so won't go as far in the air.

I dont see what the hubbub is about on football anyway?

I mean all it is a stupid mindless game for5 a country called america that has no emotions or brains when it comes down to it, and dosnt know how to deral with problenms the right way so they have this gaqme that the players get all rough with each other for no reason, and then the dumb mpeople in the stands which are no better than the ones on the field get all caught up in in like a bunch of cavemen that are stealing food from each other and cant stand to act decent in society, and are total slobs, with no manners and no backbone,

and or the same thing, wrestling is a big hype all it is is a bunch of fake stuff for a crowd full of idiots, that dontr have any brains and dont have no scruples or anything
