Fogg Tries to Notch First World Series Win for Rockies

Josh Fogg Trying for Third Postseason Win

Josh Fogg has surprisingly been the best Rockies starter in the postseason with a 2-0 record and a 1.13 ERA. Fogg has a history of giving up more hits than innings pitched and gave up about 30 more hits than innings pitched in the last three seasons.

The Boston Red Sox are not a team to give up a lot of hits to or Fogg could find himself in deep trouble. His opponent, Daisuke Matsuzaka, could either be as focused as he was last game or revert to the way he pitched in his other starts in the postseason. His postseason record is 1-1 with a 5.65 ERA. The question is if he can adjust to a raucous Rockies crowd if he struggles and tune them out.

We still have not seen the Rockies offense come alive. When one player like Matt Holliday has 4 of the 5 hits in a game like he did on Thursday night it shows the Rockies were not ready for the Red Sox after the long layoff. We may never know if it was the long layoff or just facing a better team that caused the Rockies to fall into this hitting slump the last two games but one thing for sure is that time is running out if they want to bring a World Championship to Colorado.

The Red Sox have outscored the Rockies 15-2 in the first two games and have outhit them 23-11. Rockies hitters have only walked three times while Red Sox hitters have walked 15 times and Rockies have struck out 22 times while the Red Sox have struck out 9 times. Red Sox hitters have outslugged Rockies .507-.246 and outhit them .333 to .180.

Unless the Rockies can start hitting and pitching better we may be seeing our next to last game of the World Series tonight and the last game tomorrow.

Postseason Statistics

The Arizona Diamondbacks have the best ERA in the postseason with a 2.57 mark. The Red Sox with a 3.17 are second with Rockies in third with 3.33. The other five teams in postseason had ERA's of over 5.00. The Red Sox are way ahead in strikeouts with 105 (the [[Cleveland Indians are second with 71). The Rockies lead in saves with 7 (the Red Sox and Indians are tied for second with 2). The Indians also lead in home runs given up with 17 allowed in 11 innings while the Diamondbacks and Phillies allowed four each.

The Red Sox lead in hits with 125 (the Indians are second with 107), and they are averaging over 7 runs a game with 85 runs in 12 games to lead in that category. The Rockies are third averaging 4 runs a game with 36 runs in 9 games. The Red Sox lead in home runs with 16, and have walked 62 times to lead in walks (the Indians are next with 36). Indians hitters lead in strikeouts with 93 and Rockies are second with 83 strikeouts in 9 games. They can't keep averaging 9 strikeouts a game and expect to win any games. The Red Sox are first in batting average with a .309 average while Rockies are fourth with a .229 average.

Postseason Hitting Statistics

Kevin Youkilis leads in hits with 19, with Manny Ramirez next with 16 and J.D. Drew and David Ortiz tied for third with 15. Dustin Pedroia and Mike Lowell are next with 14 and tied with Victor Martinez and Jhonny Peralta. Lowell leads in doubles with 6. Matt Holliday, Manny, and Youkilis lead in home runs with 4. In the RBI category, Ramirez leads with 16, with Lowell next with 12 and Drew in third with 11. Youkilis leads in total bases with 37, while Manny leads in walks with 15 and Travis Hafner leads in strikeouts with 15. Manny also leads in slugging percentage with a .779 mark (Youkilis is next with a .771 percentage), and also leads in hitting with a .421 average.

Postseason Pitching Statistics

Josh Beckett leads in wins with 4, and Curt Schilling is next with 3 wins with both pitchers undefeated in the postseason. Josh Fogg leads in ERA with a 1.13 ERA, while Beckett is next with a 1.20 ERA. Manny Corpas leads in saves with 5. Schilling and Jake Westbrook have given up the most hits with 25 hits allowed. The three 19 game winners lead in earned runs allowed with C.C. Sabathia leading with 15 earned runs allowed and next is Fausto Carmona and Chien-Ming Wang is tied with 12 earned runs allowed each.

Six pitchers lead in home runs allowed with 3 including Schilling and Jeff Francis from the World Series teams. Ubaldo Jimenez and C.C. Sabathia lead in postseason walks with 13 each. Beckett has struck out 35 batters which is twice as many as second place Schilling who has registered 16 strikeouts. Cole Hamels has held opponents to the lowest batting average with a .136 mark among starters with Phillip Hughes next at .143.

Good stats, Niteowl. However, you guys must remember that the Red Sox should've won those two games. It was in Fenway Park, and you had two pitchers who are simply amazing in the postseason (both WS MVPs at one point in time). Beckett is pitching like the Beckett we watched in '03, and Schilling is pitching like he has been throught his playoff career. Now, we've got game 3 coming up tonight. Josh Fogg, in my opinion, is going to help the Rockies win this one. He is on a tear in the playoffs so far. If he can stop the Red Sox offense, then game 4 is probably theirs as well. Dice-K pitched decent last time in game 7 of the ALCS, but he is inconsistent, and that's what the Red Sox need in order to win ballgames: consistency.

NiteOwl's recaps should be utilized for Buck and McCarver's broadcasts. At least the damn statistics would be accurate.

Like I said in the ALCS Game 7 preview...when Dice-K is good the SOx offense is bad...you look at the regular season some of his best games were losses, and in Game 7 the Sox bats cooled off until the 8th inning when he was done for the night

You took the words right out of my mouth, Trizz. It's almost like they plan it. When Dice pitches well, the Sawx lose, and when the bats are good for Dice K, he either gets the loss, doesn't get a decision.

Red Sox hitters are more patient and that patience has paid off in a lot of walks which have led to runs scored...3 walks for Rockies in 2 games is not much plate disipline. Hawpe has struck out 6 times by himself in only 8 at bats.

WOW. 6 Ks in 8 at-bats. That sucks. But yeah, Red Sox batters are taking a lot of pitches, and it's really working for them. In Game 1, some guy with the last name of Speir walked 3 batters in a row with the bases loaded. That really worked for the Red Sox, as the Rockies momentum was almost thrown out the window. The thing with Colorado (in my eyes) is the fact that they aren't trying hard enough. Now, they have to depend on Fogg tonight in order for the Rockies to have a chance to WIN the World Series and get their momentum back. (Actually, that was 1 thing that helped them in the ALCS; a sweep in the ALDS, and they never stopped winning in the ALCS; now, the Sawx slowed down their pace, and it's turning out to be a disaster so far).

Romiezzo is right...those two wins were almost sure things with Beckett and Schilling on the mound...With Matsuzaka and Lester pitching tonight and tomorrow night it may be the opening the Rockies need to post some wins but the hitters have to score more than one run for a change.

Maybe not. Josh Fogg is pitching tonight, and he's looking pretty good so far. Maybe 1 run IS good enough. But it's always better to be safe than sorry. ;)

Trizz made a good point...Red Sox didn't win the game until after Matsuzaka had left the game. Run support means everything in baseball except in the case of Dontrelle Willis who had the best run support in NL with 6.27 runs per 9 innings but he was 10-15 with a 5.17 ERA. Beckett was 4th in AL with 6.59 runs per 9 innings while Dice-K was 12th with 5.72 runs per 9 innings.

Being at home may give some momentum back to the Rockies...if they lose in front of the home crowd tonight they are in a heap of trouble.
