Flyers now stuck with goon reputation

From my blog, The Lazy Athlete

With 45 games of suspensions under their belts before their first home game of the regular season, the Philadelphia Flyers are gaining league wide reputation as a team of dirty players. And that reputation is actually very undeserved. But, never the less, it is overshadowing the fact that their offseason transformations are already paying dividends, with a 2-1 start to the season.

Those suspensions are being served by two players. Steve Downie, owner of a 20 gamer, is a rookie who didn't figure to be a big part of the Flyers plans this season. And Jesse Boulerice, owner of a fresh 25 game suspension, is a well traveled player, with a history of goonery. The team should not be held responsible for the acts of two players, who figured to offer next to nothing to the team this season.

The Boulerice incident is completely inexcusable. Using your stick as a weapon, especially a shot to the head like Boulerice's actions, is something that needs to be eliminated from the game. And the fact that he does not offer a whole to a hockey team in terms of skill, there is no reason the Flyers should even put up with his shenanigans. They should give him his walking papers as soon as another body can be found to fill his roster spot.

However, Downie can not be compared to Boulerice; both his actions and as a player. A lot of people want to call him a dirty player, and his hit against Dean McAmmond in the preseason was just another example of that. But that is not fair. Downie is a high draft pick of the Flyers, who has been trying to work his way onto the big league team since being drafted. Hockey is a physical sport, and in order to be successful you have to be aggressive.

Let's get one thing straight: Downie's hit against McAmmond was not clean. But to call it an act of thuggery is inappropriate. And to compare it to Boulerice's attack is even worse. Downie did not use his stick as a weapon, and he didn't even use an elbow. Yes, he left his feet, and it was a little late, but you can't say there was intent to injure. It was a young guy, being aggressive, trying to make the team.

Granted, that is no excuse for Downie; you have to be in control of your body. But, I go back to the term "intent to injure." If you look back on the previous suspensions comparable to Downie's, they all involved a player trying to injure another play; usually with the stick. So it makes perfect sense for Boulerice to be given that level of suspension, and it probably could have been greater. But Downie, I feel, was unfairly made an example of by the league. And it is even worse to characterize these Flyers based on the actions of two guys; especially considering only one of those guys is deserving of that characterization.

But hockey is like that, people hit each other for no reason at all. It's a part of the sport, but it's a big reason why hockey gets that stereotype.

It's not the 20 games, if it's intentional, I think it should be considered a criminal act.

Although in your city's favor, it has had a Stanley Cup champion, albeit in 1917 before the modern NHL.

Cmon, you had a lineup that had Boulerice and Eager in it and guys like Downey and Riley Cote ready to step up. it is a team that added some talent in the offseason, but not enough talent. Therefore, they have to fill the roster with guys like Boulerice who was once suspended for an entire season and charged criminally for literally trying to kill someone on the ice with his stick.

You conveniently forget to mention Briere, Gagne, Knuble, Carter, Richards, Hartnell, Kapanen, Timonen, Smith. But you're right, they don't have enough talent...

How many other teams in the NHL dress an entire line of guys that can't skate? How many other teams in the NHL have any players suspended, nonetheless 2 guys suspended for a total of 45 games? Yeah, I'd say you are right, the reputation of being goons in unfair.

In 259 career NHL games Boulerice and Eager have combined for 17 goals, 12 assists and 576 penalty minutes. Just to put a finer point on it, Riley Cote, in 3 seasons with the Phantoms, has played 105 games with 8 goals, 12 assists and 664 penalty minutes.

If you have enough players to fill out a roster you don't need THREE of these guys on your roster. oh, and one other thing. I know the trugh hurts, but giving it a minus is just bad form.

What the hell does not being able to skate have to do with being a goon? And what line are you even talking about. The two suspensions are isolated incidents, and Downie's is way too severe to begin with. And every team has players that have roles that don't necessarily involve offense. Just because players like Eaton and Cote have a lot of penalty minutes doesn't mean they are dirty players. You obviously just don't like the Flyers, and are doing anything you can to demean their improvements from last season.

You lose any credibility when you defend guys like Boulerice and Eager and insult Scott Stevens, a Hall of Famer who defined legal hitting in the NHL.

I understand that your lack of Stanley Cups and the Devils recent domination makes you bitter. I highly suggest therapy. And keep minusing the truth. It does wonders for your credibility.

Nothin' but class in that organization. All kidding aside, the Flyers are bullies and thats why Downie was made an example of. I too thought downies suspension was extreme but someone has to send a message to the Flyers.

The Flyers have not been bullies since the eighties. Downie is overly aggressive at times, but he is still a very talented prospect. So it's not like they got guys just to be bullies. If you think that Boulerice is enough to condemn a whole organization, than you better condemn every team that Kasparitis, Tucker, Bertuzzi, Domi, etc. have ever played for.

Nice blog entry. There's no doubt that Jesse Boulerice's actions were completely inexcusable. This compares to the Chris Simon incident from last season. Both players used their sticks with intent to injure.

See, I always understood what the Broad Street Bullies of the 1970s were all about in terms of being tough and policing the ice themselves, not necessarily looking to inflict bodily harm. It was basically the message sent that "if you mess with our best players you have to answer to us". Steve Downie's actions were a disgrace, I don't care if it's less serious than what Boulerice did. Both had the intention of injuring the opposing player in the heat of battle and needed to be punished.

Does this mean the Flyers are a bunch of goons? No. A couple of players tarnishing their reputation as a team shouldn't. In my mind, an NHL team needs at least two enforcers to help make it successful. But the Flyers don't need players like Downie and Boulerice.

And by the way, Scott Stevens wasn't a dirty player. He played on the borderline of one, but didn't cross that line. Flyers fans may argue that with Stevens' concussion blow to Eric Lindros in the 2000 Eastern Conference Finals. Same with Ducks fans in the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals when he leveled Paul Kariya. If either didn't have their head down, they MIGHT have avoided those traumatic, but legal hits to the head.

I agree with Scott Stevens, for the most part. As a Flyers fan, every bone in my body wants to call him dirty, but I know he wasn't really. But what he did to Lindros and Kariya is not much different than what Downie did. All three victims didn't keep their head up, and someone was trying to make them pay. Stevens usually didn't leave his feet, but that elbow liked to come up from time to time. Like you said, he was a borderline dirty player. The Devils have never been the same since he stopped playing.
