Floyd Signs With Cubs

High fives all around, Cliff Floyd is coming home.
High fives all around, Cliff Floyd is coming home.

Who says you can't go home? Cliff Floyd signed a contract yesterday, Jan 24th, with the Chicago Cubs. The deal is a one year deal for 3 million dollars but could reach 7.5 million with incentives. Under the perfect circumstances Floyd could get 17.5 million over 2 years. One thing is certain though, Floyd will finally get to play for his hometown heroes. The Thonwood High star grew up just outside the city limits and admitted "It's been a dream of mine for a long time."

Last year he only participated in 97 games batting .244 and hitting 11 homeruns for the New York Mets. Plagued by injuries, Floyd hopes to be healthy this year. Where he will play though is a question that Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry must answer. As it stands now, he will most likely platoon at both the corner outfield spots with Matt Murton and Jacque Jones. The 34 year old is a career .279 hitter and was elected to he the All-Star game in 2001 when he hit .317 with 31 home runs. He hit 34 long balls as recently as 2005 but has averaged only 117 games over the past 4 years.

This latest signing is most likely the final free-agent signing of an off-season that saw the Cubs spend more than 300 million dollars. However, their spending spree is not over as Hendry and Co. are working on getting pitcher Carlos Zambrano signed to a long term deal.

Good pickup. I would much rather him take at-bats away from Jones than Murton.

He'll probably split time with both, but with the potential size of his contract, it looks as though they would like to make him a starter. Could this be a foreshadow to the eventual trade of Jacque Jones?

It seems like a risky move to count on Floyd playing everyday. He will certainly play well, but I wouldn't expect him to handle the wear-and-tear of a starting job. Both Floyd and Jones have struggled against lefties, so there isn't a platoon split there based on pitcher's handedness. One scenario I would like to see, would be the Cubs trading Jones for an outfielder who can hit lefties. Then, play Floyd most of the time, but have the other guy hit against lefties to give Floyd some time to rest.

I think that's where Theriot comes in. They have been talking about playing him in the OF this spring. He had success last year against lefties.

Theriot was definitely impressive last season; however, it was in only 159 PAs. He is already 27-years-old and has no recent history of being a good hitter. I would take my chances playing Floyd everyday than giving Theriot any substantial time.

Felix Pie probably isn't quite ready, but don't you think he will probably be taking over CF in the near future and Soriano will be shifting over? Then you would have a rather nice outfield of Murton, Pie, and Soriano.

I guess this is a "good" problem for the Cubs to have? What concerns me more is where they bat Floyd/Murton/Jones in the batting order. Using Soriano in leadoff screws up the whole batting order methinks.

I actually like what Theriot brings to the table. He has improved his batting average and on-base percentage at every stop, and hit .325 in the pros last year. I'd like to see more of him in the outfield.

Theriot also only hit 3 HRs in his last 3 years in the minors. I agree he looked very good last season, but remember he is old for a prospect and does not have a past that indicates him being worthy of a starting position. Just something to keep in mind before awarding him too much playing time.

Mets may be the senior citizen team, but it sure does look like the Cubs are the Mayo Clinic club.

Can't wait to see Floyd and his two bad knees chasing fly balls in a 25 mph crosswind. What's the over/under on him regretting his decision? Opening Day?

Floyd's a solid player and a good clubhouse presence. He will be missed in New York.

The anatomy of a 4th outfielder: Growing platoon split? Check. Declining walk rate? Check. Power in freefall? Check. Factor in his injury history and the fact that he's well past his prime, and I wouldn't exactly bet the farm on a bounce-back season. Given the incentive-laced nature of the deal, it looks like Hendry isn't banking on it, either. But unless they're dealing Jones, why block Murton, who's not going to need to be platooned? It could be a nice pickup if Floyd stays healthy and productive, but it seems redundant if they plan on keeping Jacque Jones.

I agree. I see Pie starting at AAA and with Pagan and Theriot able to play OF, I see them trading away Jones right about the time Pie should be coming up in July, provided everyone is healthy and no one is playing terribly.

By the way, Angel Pagan has one of the best names ever. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Cubs are really making a strong attempt to build a winner. I like it. I'll give props.
