Who says you can't go home? Cliff Floyd signed a contract yesterday, Jan 24th, with the Chicago Cubs. The deal is a one year deal for 3 million dollars but could reach 7.5 million with incentives. Under the perfect circumstances Floyd could get 17.5 million over 2 years. One thing is certain though, Floyd will finally get to play for his hometown heroes. The Thonwood High star grew up just outside the city limits and admitted "It's been a dream of mine for a long time."
Last year he only participated in 97 games batting .244 and hitting 11 homeruns for the New York Mets. Plagued by injuries, Floyd hopes to be healthy this year. Where he will play though is a question that Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry must answer. As it stands now, he will most likely platoon at both the corner outfield spots with Matt Murton and Jacque Jones. The 34 year old is a career .279 hitter and was elected to he the All-Star game in 2001 when he hit .317 with 31 home runs. He hit 34 long balls as recently as 2005 but has averaged only 117 games over the past 4 years.
This latest signing is most likely the final free-agent signing of an off-season that saw the Cubs spend more than 300 million dollars. However, their spending spree is not over as Hendry and Co. are working on getting pitcher Carlos Zambrano signed to a long term deal.
