Flashes in the Pan; 1980-present

There's a ton of good rookies making big impacts this year. Will they last? Will Francisco Liriano go the way of Nelson Liriano? Is Justin Verlander another Todd Van Poppel? Is Jonathan Papelbon the next Gregg Olson?

Does any baseball story warm your heart like the Legend of Joe Charboneau? Here's a guy that won the RoY with .289 avg and 23 dingers, then proceeded to fall off the face of the planet. Many people forsaw a Hall of Fame career, even writing songs about "Super Joe". Back injuries and a penchant for opening beer bottles with his eyesocket did him in. 201 games played and out of baseball.

Who was going to be the BIGGEST thing but completely fizzled?

There is such guys as...

  • Luis Medina
  • Kevin Maas
  • Sam Horn
  • Ron Jones
  • Chris Brown
  • Tim Pyznarski
  • Hensley Meulens
  • Torey Luvullo
  • Billy Jo Robidoux
  • Rick Ankiel
  • Francisco Cabrera
  • Charlie Kerfeld... the list is huge once you remember 'these guys'

I wanna go beyond the Gregg Jefferies', Steve Averys, Jose Linds, Oddibe McDowells, David Wests and JD Drews of the world (all the plurals were for you Ross K) - guys with impossible hype to live up to, but had semi-lengthy careers, nonetheless

Maybe Bob Hamelin (who crushed Manny Ramirez in RoY) is the cutoff line, he played just under 500 games and disappered forever. (Pat Listach played 503 games)

Now, everyone knows Mark Fidrych, etc... Bobo Holloman who threw a no-hitter his first start and won 2 more games in his career...but let's keep it from Charboneau to present..

Since 1980, who are the biggest flashes in the pan?'

    • P.S. - I still have 7 open spaces in the Stiles Fantasy Football Draftniks league.

It is a no trade, no roster movement, draft only league. Draft 'em and forget 'em. Total points, not head to head. Who drafts best/luckiest, wins!

Creative team names only!

How about Kaz Sasaki? He was one of the most dominant relievers in the league for a few years, winning Rookie of the Year, and then left.

not bad, although he did have a lengthy career in Japan first... certainly qualifies by the given criteria

Alexandre Daigle - he was supposed to be the next Gretzky and ended up being a less-productive Doug Wickenheiser.

even though he isn't a baseball player... he didn't live up to the massive hype, but he still played for a while and was productive over time... otherwise, see Eric Lindros.

I'd also like to include Jerome Walton, Cubs ROY... and Tuffy Rhodes, who hit 3HR in an opening day game and then did nothing else in the bigs. He did have a great Japanese career, but that doesn't count.

I looked at Jerome, he played too long, too many games... Tuffy is a nice add, I should have had him...

Sam Horn took 8 years to hit 62 homers and 23 of those were in one year so he hit 39 in the other 7 years combined.
