Five is a rotation; six is a problem

Everyone knows the situation. Six starting pitchers is one to many. If Pat Gillick can’t find a trade partner than one of the six will move to the bullpen. The question is who.

Jamie Moyer doesn’t throw hard enough to throw in relief. Cole Hamels has way too much talent. Freddy Garcia’s greatest value is as a starter because of his ability to throw 200 innings with ease. Brett Myers has offered to close but likely wouldn’t be satisfied with throwing in middle relief.

That leaves Jon Lieber and Adam Eaton. Eaton has also commented that while he would pitch as a reliever he rather not. Only Lieber has spent any significant time as a reliever. In 1996, he pitched 36 games for Pittsburgh Pirates in relief with a solid 4.14 ERA. However, that was a long time ago. Two months ago Gillick commented that Lieber couldn’t pitch in relief because his defense was a liability in late inning situations.

Neither pitcher is a good option. However, I think the least bad option is Lieber. If the Phillies let Lieber start and he pitches well, then his trade value will increase. That would allow the Phils to trade Lieber and solve the underlying problem. Eaton can serve as the long man in the bullpen throwing three innings every few days if one of the Phillies starters gets shelled. Five is a rotation and six is a problem that can only be fixed with a trade.

I say move the smallest contract remaining to the Bullpen and have him throw as a middle reliever

yeah, but you have to think that would be Cole Hamels, which shouldn't be an option. He's got way too much upside to have in the bullpen.

Gillick said that he wouldn't pitch Lieber in relief because his defense was a liability??? What kind of excuse is that!

"Five is a rotation and six is a problem that can only be fixed with a trade," or an injury.

I don't think it's a problem unless you have an Ace for your No. 1

I think we need to get rid of the rotation and just have 12 pitchers able to go 3 IP whenever.

Radical thinking! If, as a rule, relievers have lower ERAs than starters, why not have a team of all relievers?

That was tried by Oakland about a decade or so ago, and IT FAILED!

I know, I was just kidding; this article explains why it wouldn't work -- the workload of an entire season is simply too demanding for anybody but starters.

I remember a few years ago Lou Pinella threatened to do this with the D-Rays. Can't remember if he actually tried it though...

I would not trade Lieber at this point. I would put him in as a reliever. The relief staff right now is slightly above the brutal stage. Only way I would trade Lieber is in a package for a starting outfielder.

What about a third baseman? Or, do you have faith in Helms?

I can live with the Nunez / Helms platoon at 3rd. Nunez will be a last inning replacement, while Helms will be helpful with his bat. One of the worse trades that Ed Wade was Polanco to the Tigers for a guy who is sitting in jail today for attempted murder. YUCK!

I would like to put something out there that every Red Sox fan learned the hard way last year: you can never have enough starting pitching.

You mean, you can never have enough better-than-replacement-level starting pitching... With Jason Johnson and Kevin Jarvis taking the mound in the 1st, you might as well just forfeit. Luckily for Philly, while they may have "too many" starters, at least they're all better than the flotsam and jetsam floating around out there on waivers.

I would 100% disagree - I think having even five is too many. Four is the right size for a rotation: you have an extra arm in the bullpen and there's almost no difference between 3 and 4 days rest.

Barkingclam, I would tend to agree with you. In most instances, I bet a team would be helped by moving to a four-man rotation.

"Five is a rotation and six is a problem that can only be fixed with a trade." - The last words of a failed GM. Put one of them in long relief until one of the 5 starters gets injured. When that happens, slot the 6th man in the the 5 spot, and bam! problem solved.
