Five Steps to a Mets World Series

18

by user DNL

46-34 is a pretty good first half. With, potentially, 47 wins at the mathematical half-way mark, a Mets team that managed to lose in horrific fashion for the first part of June is, nevertheless, on pace for 93 wins and a second-consecutive NL East pennant. The Shea boys likely playoff-bound.

Here are five things Mets fans need to do and hope for, as we strive for a World Series title.

#5: A Righty Bat for Left Field

The Mets offense right now is its Achilles' heal, which is shocking. Carlos Delgado is in a season-long slump, and it does not help that Moises Alou and, yes, Lastings Milledge are on the shelf. The good news is that one of them should come back soon, and that both should be back by October. Let's assume that they're both back by August 1.

I propose that Alou, Milledge, and Shawn Green enter into a three-way, two spot job share. Green is great against righty pitching -- .304/.356/.509 so far this year, in 161 AB -- but terrible versus lefties (.216/.284/.284 in 74 AB). Versus lefty starters, the outfield should be Alou, Carlos Beltran, and Milledge, left to right. Against righties, Alou and Milledge should basically job share. This will give Alou some time off, especially as Endy Chavez returns and takes an occasional spot-start. With Milledge also able to spell Beltran in center, there's no reason to think that he'll be short of at bats.

#4: Seventh Inning Help

Aaron Heilman is either hurt, mechanically screwed up, mentally screwed up, or a combination of the three. Pedro Feliciano has rightfully taken Heilman's place as the Mets' preferred 8th inning opinion. Joe Smith is effective against righties, and, don't look now, but Scott Schoeneweis is a decent LOOGY.

My idea: When Pedro returns, and assuming that the current rotation is intact and healthy (meaning "Jorge Sosa" and not "Mike Pelfrey"), move Heilman to the Aaron Sele mop-up role, and give Pedro the 7th inning. Yes, use Petey as a RP. As a friend of mine pointed out, Martinez is going to be lacking stamina upon his return. Also, if Heilman is effective in the mop-up role, he's effectively showing that he can start. And we can trade him in December.

#3: Relax

June sucked, at least until the last 10 days or so. I was solidly on the "Get Mark Buerhle!!!!" bandwagon, but really, that was silly. The Mets don't really need another starter, and what we do need -- a right-handed bat -- is the one thing we would have had to trade to get Buerhle. So, take a deep breath.

#2: A Bench That Can Hit

Julio Franco, I *heart* you. Have forever, because I drafted you to play second base for me on one of my first even fantasy baseball teams -- almost 20 years ago. So it pains me to say that you're stick-a-fork-in-it done. Unfortunately, between Franco and the fact that David Newhan and Ben Johnson stink, well, the bench needs help. Damion Easley and Ruben Gotay are good, but they play virtually the same position. Ramon Castro is fine, and won't really be playing during the post-season -- he's more insurance than anything else. Assuming the Mets carry Endy and Milledge with Easley, Gotay, and Castro, that leaves room for one more bat. Get one.

#1: Use the DL More Creatively

The Mets are winning in spite of, not because of, guys like Schoenweis and Delgado. We can afford to lose them for two to four weeks if a DL stint and a "rehab" week is going to make things better. This will also give Willie the excuse he needs to use the lineup more creatively, e.g. Shawn Green at 1B and random AAA-ers in the pen.

I agree with most of it. Not Pedro in the Pen and here's why. We will need to stretch him out from 4-5 innings when he comes back. The other answer to this is the 6-man rotation, giving him, and more importantly Glavine and Duque extra rest. All of this is contingent on how tight the race is. If it's really close, you have to make other decisions. I have a feeling it will be.

Good post...I've pretty much had it with Schoeneweis, Heilman, and Franco is getting there...another GOOD starter wouldn't hurt. I don't consider Mark Buehrle a lifesaver... Sorry bout the repost...

Milledge is slowly turning into Mark Prior. I think you guys should trade him now before his stock drops significantly. I say don't bother risking it, you already have way too many guys on the DL. Never-the-less some good insight, very good article. Can you write a "Five Steps to a Yankees World Series" article?

As much as I hate to admit it, I'm going to start to believe that soon Pean. I'm giving it three more weeks.

I'm a Sawx fan, obviously. But here's what I'd do if I were Cashman right now.

1. Get rid of Torre. 2. Get a real bullpen, possibly get another starter 3. Make some moves right now, get some rookies to help you out... 4. Win games. A LOT more games. 5. Make the players actually do WELL in the ALDS and ALCS. As of late, they have sucked. In the '04 ALCS, A-Rod, Matsui, Jeter, Shef, they all sucked those 4 games against the Red Sox. In '05, they did bad against the Angels. and in '06, they didn't do great against the Tigers either. After '01, it seemed like they've had bad luck in the playoffs...

That's what I'd do..

There is a reason why bloggers do not run MLB teams.. or Minor League Teams.. Or INdy League Teams.....

you probably lead your fantasy league in Free Agent Pickups and drops too!

A player in a platoon position can never get his game up to its full potential, Platooning Green or Alou would knock .020-.030 points off their averages no doubt.

Losing Bradford was a huge blow to our pen.. D. Sanchez as well. Heilman has been asked to carry a heavy load and unfortunately he is human. Considering he is not playing in a position he wants to be he is doing spectacular! Shoewiese or how ever its spelled should be a one batter relief pitcher, but unfortunately there are no One armed batters in the MLB....

Until Delgado starts hitting, mets are going to keep shitting! This lineup needs to get hot, thats all there is to it...

Pedro in the pen?? COME ON!

Is that true? That platooning players hurts their average, I mean? It might be, but it's the first I've heard of it...I'd like to see some evidence before believing it...

a lot of players don't perform well in part time play...namely its hard to find a pinch hitter...although I'm not sure about more of a part time role...like 60-80 games...I'm sure its different for guys who go from starting to part time, rather than fresh/rookie guys...

I have heard that about pinch hitting, but that's different - you're cold and it's your first and only at-bat of the game. Plus, when you're pinch hitting, you're usually facing a reliever; relievers get more guys out b/c they only throw an inning or two, so they don't have to save their stuff for anything. I'd think the opposite might be true; if you put Green in a platoon, he doesn't have to worry about changing his swing so he can hit lefties, he can just keep doing what he is doing against righties.

The only way the Mets make it the series this year is if they pay and buy tickets to it.

Or, if they make the playoffs, win the division series, and win the NLCS

also, there is the possibility of players being traded to a team that goes to the series - this is as fun as the 8 ways to first!

This is a stupid article. If you've watched baseball, you know that the playoffs are a toss-up. Any team is capable of winning 3 out of 5, and then 4 out of 7 against any other team at any time. There is "One Step to a Mets World Series" - Make the playoffs and then hope you are the team where the coin falls on your side during the 15-20 game playoff stretch.

I completely agree with you, Roblefko. If you've made it to the top of your division at the end, or the wild card, and you win 7 games after that (3 in the ALDS and 4 in the ALCS), you'll make it to the World Series, and then you have the 4 most important games you have to win to get bragging rights for one year. Look at the Cardinals. We thought they'd get eliminated in the ALDS, never mind the World Series, and they made it.

If the Mets do pull a deal, Milledge likely would be in it. From what I've read and heard, they are tired of his attitude, and would insist he be included. The ChiSox are hot to get rid of Jermaine Dye, a deal for Buehrle which included Milledge would solve the White Sox problem, making it easier to dump Dye.
