First Rossi, Now Alan Smith. Carlos Tevez Better Bring Some Friends

Man, Carlos Tevez must be better than anybody thought! But he is still just one guy, right?

A day after sending Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi to Villareal for £6.75 million ($13.5 million), Manchester United has agreed to sell another member of its attack, Alan Smith, to Newcastle United in a deal worth £6 million ($12 million). In a previous post, written prior to these two transfers, I’d commented that ManU lacked depth at the striker position. Following these departures, it appears that Manchester United will be hitching its wagon to a rather small group of world-class attackers, without a whole lot of experience in support. The departures of Rossi and Smith leave United with an attack force led by the world-class duo of Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, with Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer behind them. Saha is a world-class striker, but there has been speculation that the Frenchman may, in the not too distant future, seek a move to a club where he will be provided the opportunity to be primary attacking option. Solskjaer, who turned 34 in February, is not getting any younger and has been plagued by serious knee injuries in recent years.

With the question marks surrounding both Saha and Solskjaer, it would serve United well to bolster its collection of strikers, a problem that not only has yet to be addressed, but has been compounded by BOTH of the club’s young, but experienced strikers. With both Rossi and Smith gone, United’s most viable option at striker after Saha and Solskjaer becomes the young Brazilian, Anderson. A recent transfer from Porto, Anderson is certainly an abundantly gifted footballer, but he’s neither experienced in the English Premier League, nor is he a pure striker in the mold of the club’s four previously mentioned attackers. It must be noted that, given his financial resources as well as his football acumen, Alex Ferguson could very well have an ace up his sleeve in the form of another new striker in addition to Tevez, but that is hardly a safe assumption to make right now.

Granted, a healthy portion of Manchester United’s goal-scoring is provided by its midfield stars, like Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. Also, this trio should receive some help in the scoring department from the newly acquired Portuguese winger Nani, as well as Chris Eagles. The problem is this- none of these gifted midfielders will be able to move up front and fill the holes that would be created in the event of a rash of injuries to the United strikers.

ManU had better hope that Carlos Tevez brings some friends!

This isn't surprising at all. They still have Saha, Tevez, Solskjaer and Rooney. That's plenty. I'm fascinated at the proposition of a Smith-Owen partnership for Newcastle United though, if Owen doesn't move on.

They have a good youth team, if things go wrong, they can pull someone up from there. Or play Ronaldo upfront if they get desperate. This is no biggy.

If everyone remains healthy, I agree that United should have enough in attack. The problem arises when injuries pop up and the club is forced to insert inexperienced players into the lineup or force players to play out of position. United quality in attack can't be questioned, it would just benefit them to have another quality option at the position.

Sir Alex has had this problem before though, and the youngsters he has brought in have been excellent, sadly! So I would trust him, he's been doing it for 20 years, he should know what he's been doing. And he may still bring someone else in yet, it's unclear. What would leave him in trouble though, is if the Tevez deal falls through. It's not technically a deal yet, it's in court and there are all sorts of problems with it.

So true! On both counts. Sir Alex is as good as it gets in building a football team and I'm sure he's aware of anything that he may need on his roster. The prospect of the Tevez deal falling through is the scariest thing for ManU!

I don't think Alan Smith really played much of a role last year as a striker and Rossi wasn't even on the team. So neither is a big lose. Even if Tevez or Rooney get hurt they can play Saha or go with a lone striker and a couple attacking midfielders.

We will certainly need goals from all over the park again this season. I would feel much better if we had an out and out striker. I still think Fergie has something up his sleeve that will have all our jaws gaping. I know it might seem crazy, but I think a player like Anelka could thrive at Old trafford. What do you think?

I am of the belief that Sir Alex isn't done yet. I could see him bringing in another top striker. I think Anelka would be a great fit.

Here is a totally ficticious thought. (disclaimer: this is my random thought and it is completely unsubstatiated by actual events): What about making an offer to Inter Milan for Adriano? He'd be an outstanding #4 or #5 attacker. He's a physical specimen, an out and out striker (as Jgiuffra said), and the fact that he's coming off of a bad year could benefit United in two ways: 1)he will presumably be motivated to regain his stature in the sport and 2) he may be available to ManU at a significant discount.

I am planning an article about the new-look Liverpool side- I just don't know if they're finished!
