First Look at Denver Broncos 2007 Schedule

A heartfelt look at the Denver Broncos schedule.

All times Eastern, which doesn't make sense for a Denver-fan to post, but translating into mountain time zone wouldn't make sense for the rest of the world that doesn't know the mountain time zone exists.

Week 1 - Sunday, September 9
Denver at Buffalo 1 p.m.
I hate 1pm (11am Denver) games. It's too early. I'm fine with starting on the road since September is hot and I will already have been to the Rocky Mountain Showdown (between Colorado and Colorado State) the weekend before and my burn won't likely have healed by then. Is Buffalo any good? I doubt it. Denver wins.
Week 2 - Sunday, September 16
Oakland at Denver 4:15 p.m.
Why, of Denver's 3 Monday night games, are none of them against the Raiders? Oh yeah, the Raiders suck. But at least the rivalry makes this fun to watch. They may have the best wide receiver corps in the NFL, but a lack of QB (and who they're thinking about signing) leaves them in the trenches. When will Al Davis give up the team? Is he dead yet? No? Denver wins.
Week 3 - Sunday, September 23
Jacksonville at Denver 4:05 p.m.
Jacksonville? They've made the playoffs once in the last 7 seasons (2005) and lost in the wild card game. Win. Maybe go see Byron Leftwich play.
Week 4 - Sunday, September 30
Denver at Indianapolis 4:15 p.m.
Denver hasn't beaten Indy in Indy since ... well, ever perhaps. Denver can't stop Manning. Indy is hot and Manning is hotter. Denver loses, big. Thankfully we don't have to play them twice a season anymore like years past.
Week 5 - Sunday, October 7
San Diego at Denver 4:15 p.m.
San Diego is good. I only think Denver has a chance because it's in Denver. The home field for Denver is storied. And after being embarrassed by Indy last week, Denver wins in a close, overtime game won by a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Week 6 - Open week
I always like later open weeks, to allow for injuries and a little more rest after the grind sets in, but this is the middle of the pack for open weeks. Way better than last year which was in week 4. Talk about useless. These professional athletes that make ungodly sums and have nothing else to do in life but stay in shape need a break after 3 games? Whynot have a week in the middle for a break like every other league. Oh, right. NFL greed.
Week 7 - Sunday, October 21
Pittsburgh at Denver 8:15 p.m.
These times are a'changin. Pittsburgh is on it's way down and Denver hasn't decided yet. Home field in the even matchup means Denver wins.
Week 8 - Monday, October 29
Green Bay at Denver 8:30 p.m.
Green Bay on Monday night? This will be a snooze-fest, especially with Tony Kornheiser calling Denver a "cow town" 600 times in the first hour and talking about Denver's "favorite" restaurants that no locals go to or are surprised are still in business or never heard of. I guess that's a good thing that Kornheiser goes to those restaurants, I'll never see him when I go out then and he'll never crowd up my spots.
Week 9 - Sunday, November 4
Denver at Detroit 1 p.m.
Rematch of the Thanksgiving game last year. Detroit is the worst team in the league. Surprisingly, they are still worse than the Raiders. Denver wins. I won't even watch. The high school team I coach will still be in the playoffs.
Week 10 - Sunday, November 11
Denver at Kansas City 1 p.m.
Denver can't win in KC. It's an even matchup, but the home field tips it. Denver loses. Dante Hall runs back 5 punt/kick offs.
Week 11 - Monday, November 19
Tennessee at Denver 8:30 p.m.
Battle of the young QBs. VY has a little head start, but Denver is deeper all around. Denver wins. Thankfully it's a short week with Thanksgiving a few days away so when I stay up and watch this one I only have to be groggy a few days, until the tryptophan kicks in that is. I mute the sound to try and ignore Kornheiser and Madden, but when ESPN shows them every 30 seconds I have to switch to Tivo and fast forward between plays.
Week 12 - Sunday, November 25
Denver at Chicago 1 p.m.
Chicago went to the moon last year, but the off-season hasn't been good to them. Chicago still has a sucky quarterback. They fall apart this year after raising ticket prices 247% because of last season. Denver wins. Though this is my weakest selection since Denver is on a short week and traveling around the holiday and perhaps da Bears aren't that bad.
Week 13 - Sunday, December 2
Denver at Oakland 4:05 p.m.
Davis still around? Oh. Oakland still sucks. Denver wins. Mike Shanahan gets the well earned feeling of justice and revenge.
Week 14 - Sunday, December 9
Kansas City at Denver 4:15 p.m.
Denver will want payback, and home field is huge in this series. If Hall is hurt, Denver wins 38-35. If Hall isn't hurt, Denver wins 38-21.
Week 15 - Thursday, December 13
Denver at Houston 8:15 p.m.
Thursday? And it's not Thanksgiving? Oh, right, the NFL crooks forcing you to get the NFL network. I signed up for it last season because the Broncos were on Thursday for Thanksgiving and my dad whined enough. I mean, can you at least get good games on the NFL network if you want us to signup and pay for it? I mean, you own the league and network and you pick Denver at Houston? Oh yah, Denver wins. I cancel my NFL Network subscription.
Week 16 - Monday, December 24
Denver at San Diego 8 p.m.
Here's a dandy game that might affect the playoffs. Except that it's on Christmas Eve and most of the east and mid-west won't watch because it's a west coast game. Kornheiser calls Denver a "cow town" a record 8,757 times. ESPN extends his contract 84 years for $74.8 billion. Madden invents another new bird to waste more food in the face of the homeless. San Diego wins.
Week 17 - Sunday, December 30
Minnesota at Denver 4:15 p.m.
A brilliant idea: Let's end the season with a NFC/AFC game instead of a conference matchup that might affect the playoffs. I guess the NFL has all but come out and said the last week of the season is meaningless since you only play to get into the playoffs, unlike college football where every week of the regular season means something. Minnesota will suck again. Denver wins.

That's 13-3 for those keeping track. Seems fairly impressive, but Denver has an easy schedule this season. The win-loss for their opponents on the 2006 season is 131-125 (.512). But they have 5 sub-.500 opponents (Oakland twice, Detroit, Houston, Minnesota) and 7 basically .500 (within one win or loss of 500, ie, 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7) teams. That leaves 4 teams who were stellar last year: San Diego (twice), Indy and Chicago. I'm calling Chicago's bluff and saying they were more lucky than good last season which then means Denver will shine.

Then again, we still have rookie QB Jay Cutler. Maybe it should be 3-13?

I think 13-3 is optimistic, but honestly, not by a lot. And I agree how ridiculous having a Week 17 Vikings/Broncos matchup is. Why not switch that with Week 16?

Yah, when I added it up at the end it seemed high too. If you figure they split the 7 even-competition games, then they're 9-7 or 10-6 which is probably very realistic.
