Jeff Weaver took the mound for the tenth time of the season on June 20th, facing the Pirates. Little did anyone know that he was going to shut them down, and help the Seattle Mariners win, 7-0. Weaver pitched a gem, as he pitched a four hit shutout. It was Weaver's first win of the season, as his record improves to only 1-7.
Weaver dominated the Pirates in his third start back from the disabled list, and he received plenty of run support from his teammates in order to gain his confidence and go all the way to pitch the shutout. His win stopped a 6 game losing streak from extending and more importantly, woke up their bats. Richie Sexson hit his 12th home run of the season. Ichiro is on another hitting streak now, as he extended it to 15 games.
The Pirates, meanwhile, had no answer for Weaver, who looked more like the pitcher that beat the Tigers in the 2006 World Series than the one who gave up seven runs in two innings against the Red Sox earlier this season. Often prone to the big inning, he avoided that Wednesday night, giving Seattle a much-needed boost in the win column. We're finally seeing what the Mariners paid $8,325,000 for.
