First Japanese Player to Play in the NFL

Tonight, Noriaki Kinoshita became the first Japanese-born player to play in the NFL. He returned the second-half kickoff for the Atlanta Falcons, he returned the kick for 23 yards. Kinoshita earned his spot in Training camp this year, but still has to make the team by proving himself during the preseason. Kinoshita has played 3 seasons in the NFL Europe league, and I guess Falcons coaches were impressed with his play. Kinoshita is 5'10 and around 180 pounds, and has tremendous speed, he was a return specialist when he played for Amsterdam in the NFLE, he averaged 19.2 Yds per punt return with one TD.

Here is a quote from Kinoshita:

"I want to be, ummm, how do you say it? A pioneer? Yes, I want to be a pioneer"

And that is what I see Knishita as, a pioneer for other Japan-born players to come to the U.S. to play in the NFL. Kind of like Jackie Robinson being the first African American in Major League Baseball, I think this is just the begining of Japanese-born players coming to the NFL. Perhaps the NFL will someday (many years from now), be a worldwide game, and get into the Olympics (though I highly doubt that will ever happen). But that would be pretty cool.

Noriaki Kinoshita will have nowhere near the societal pressures that Jackie had in baseball. I am white and I am offended by the comparison.

Scott Fujita (or whatever his name is) was raised Japanese so he's FIRST!!! (even though he was a white kid adopted by Japanese parents)

Anybody else smell a gimick to to take the attention off of someone else? I doubt it will be an impact powerfull enough to make us forget or even cut down on posts about him here.

I could make a real CRUDE inference about the Atlanta Falcons, Asian customs and another dog related nightmare but it would be a false stereotype of Japanese people, so I will not.

This comparison makes about as much sense as a previous attempt here to equate Ali's legacy to Dale friggin' Earnhardt. I have nothing against Kinoshita but his "breakthrough" is not the second coming of Jackie Robinson.

apples and quadrangles, Tyrone. The Dale=Ali thing was WAAAAY more offensive.

When the N in NFL stands for Nip, and not the other N word, you'll remember I warned you!

Oh, nice hit and run!

If he can make the team then good for him. He being Japanese isn't anywhere near the lines of Jackie Robinson breaking the barriers into Baseball. He isn't having to endure racism and discrimination. He's walking into the game with open arms. No one is stopping him. He's not getting spit on, stuff thrown into his house, crosses burning on his doorstep. I actually would like to see his contribution but no one can equate breaking into any sport with the way Jackie Robinson broke in and the stuff he endured by doing so.

Very well put Kayos. While Kinoshita could be considered a pioneer I agree in that his conditions upon entering the sport do not come close to the experiences that Jackie Robinson had to endure.
