It was a wonderful college football season. Thanks to all Armchair users who wrote opinions, news, and Ross for doing the College Football Poll. I have chosen to highlight some of the astute and dumb predictions/comments that I made this year.
Things I got right
Regarding Ohio State, " a win over Texas could be the springboard for another BCS season."
My Big Ten Preview
Regarding Troy Smith, “If Ohio State gets in the mix this guy could take home the Heisman.”
My Early Heisman List
Regarding Wisconsin, "Once again, most publications will pick the Badgers to finish in the second half of the Big Ten standings, and once again, this team should surprise."
My Big Ten Preview
"Besides, Chris Leak should explode in this offense. Remember Alex Smith in 2004, we might see a better version in Chris Leak."
My SEC Preview
"Just because Louisville hasn't been a storied program in years past doesn't mean they aren't a number one team."
Showdown versus I am CPCP
“11-2, Rose Bowl Win, ranked #4 in the final poll”
My USC Preview
Regarding the USC v. Oregon State game, “USC finally shows a great all around performance, with a solid victory. USC 38, Oregon State 7”
My USC-Oregon State Preview
“Why Louisville, Tennessee, … may surprise”
"Why Louisville, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh may surprise."
I said that?
Regarding Florida State, "the offense should be one of the nation's best."
My ACC Preview
“It’s clear that Mike Riley is on his way out. Losing to Boise State is bad enough, but when they have Oregon natives on their roster putting up big numbers against you, then I think your time is narrowing down.”
Pac 10 Ramblings 09/09/06
"... Pittsburgh may surprise."
"Why Louisville, Tennessee, and Pittsburgh may surprise."
“So, without the option of a two quarterback system and a quarterback playing worry free football, Arizona State is poised for a consecutive appearance in the AP Top 25”
How Sam Keller's departure makes Arizona State Better
Ben Olson is for real. Repeat, "Ben Olson is for real!"
Pac 10 Ramblings 09/02/06
“Bill Calahan is leading the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the promised land.”
Placing them 8th in the Preseason College Football Poll
"It's actually quite simple. Northern Illinois must knock off one of the Big Ten heavyweights, Ohio State or Iowa, and win all its conference games. If they do, they'll be 12-1 with the big win neccessary. Led by All-American Tailback Garrett Wolfe, the Huskies could find themselves in a BCS game."
Non-BCS Teams Who Could make a BCS Bowl
Regarding Boise State, “However, they lack a hile profile game, which would give 'em the nod.”
Non-BCS Teams Who Could make a BCS Bowl
The Louisville Pick
If you have been an active reader at ArmchairGm for the past few months than you might be aware of the infamous Louisville pick.
During the first annual ArmchairGM College Football Polls, it was I, The Beast who voted the Louisville Cardinals number one. To say the least it drew critiscm from many armchair users.
- "By the way, who gave number one votes to Louisville and California? I want names and phone numbers!"
- "Also UL and Cal? Thats it I want a revote and Im putting UVA at 1"
Despite the critics I defended Louisville throughout the year saying they deserved a title shot until the loss to Rutgers.
As I look back on the pick, I will remember it as a gutsy move. Too gutsy? Well you can decide. Maybe I did go over the top by declaring them the number one team in the nation. In retrospect, I probably should’ve ranked them top 5 and then made my bold prediction saying, “don’t be surprised if Louisville seriously contends for the national title.” It was certaintly a bold move, and I encourage other users to always make bold, logical predictions. We learned that Louisville may not be the nation's best team or even top 5, but they are now ready for prime time College Football and belong among the nationa's elite.
Pac 10- USC
ACC- Florida State Wake Forest
SEC- Florida
Big East- Louisville
Big Ten- Ohio State
Big XII- Didn't do a preview, but I did have Nebraska ranked 8th in the initial poll, the highest of any Big XII team.
Heisman Trophy- Brady Quinn Troy Smith
