Feel good story, gone bad? - Rick Ankiel and HGH

by DaddyMac22

The New York Daily News has broken a potentially shocking story that Cardinals pitcher turned slugger Rick Ankiel allegedly received a year long supply of human growth hormone (H.G.H) in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of an American cross country illegal drug distribution operation. Well, I guess this story might explain Ankiel's 'unbelievable' power surge?!

According to the paper, Ankiel received eight shipments of HGH from 'Signature Pharmacy' (sounds pretty shady, eh?) in Orlando from January to December 2004, including the brand-name injectable drugs Saizen and Genotropin.

Sadly, the stunning news comes one day after Ankiel’s biggest day yet - a two-homer, seven-RBI performance - and as the Cardinals were inching their way back into the NL Central race.

Will Ankiel be suspended? How will MLB react? Interestingly, the date given as the date Ankiel allegedly purchased said materials (2004) was before MLB banned HGH and they still can’t test for it. Bud Selig’s faces a tough task fighting the ridiculously strong baseball players union getting a suspension out of this one, on the face of it.

You have to ask though, what is with these millionaire idiots? First Rodney Harrison and now Rick Ankiel. Eventually, you are probably going to get caught, how is it worth it? Just idiotic behaviour, assuming this is all true and not part of somemacabre smear campaign against the former shoe-in for 'Comeback of the year'.

For the love of God. Where is George Bush Snr and his 'Just say no!' campaign when you need it? I guess he's busy making arms deals with Saudi Princes.

Are major professional sports stars lining up for the second part of Traffic (movie tag line: 'No one gets away clean') or something?

Worse yet, I was all chuffed at having picked up Ankiel in a baseball fantasy league. The fool's going to ruin my playoff run. Damn. This is all getting ridiculous.

To his disappointment, Roger Goodell learns that he cannot suspend MLB players.

Well, MLB can suspend you if you test positive...and he didn't...so I'm unsure how this will be taken... I also hope it isn't true...but if it is, I don't get it...was he hurt (a la harrison) because most pitchers needs HGH for healing than strength (just like harrison again)

He did have Tommy John surgery in 2004, I think...I know he had the surgery, not sure when...

It is a shame MLB has such poorly defined abilities and powers, someone who purchases HGH in an effort to achieve a false advantage should be suspended under a 'general sportsmanship' blanket rule.

He had it then quit before baseball added it to the banned list. He shouldn't have done it at all, but apparently wasn't a user while it was a banned substance. It doesn't help his image with the kids, but MLB can't touch him on this, barring further information.

Good eye for detail. Yes, HGH was NOT banned by Major League Baseball until 2005, at which time Ankiel stopped using it. This is less of a story than it seems at first glance.

so that makes it alright... Barry Bonds should get such leeway!

I was going to say the same thing Manny, but I'm getting sick of repeating myself and being insulted. So many people seem blind to the hypocrisy.

Bonds hasn't been banned because he hasn't failed a test or been proven to have taken steroids! We mean leeway in the sense of fan reaction. Ankiel and Harrison get "well, they are good people, so they probably had a good excuse for taking HGH." Bonds gets, "BURN HIM!"

If he got a years supply, how do we know he didn't save half or all of it and use it this year? Its not like he has been tested.

Good point MJD. We shouldn't automatically assume Ankiel only used the HGH to recover from injury and then quit using it.

I really think that if Bonds wasn't wrapped up in the career HR record he wouldn't get such a negative reaction.

As for Manny's comment...I never said Ankiel was right, just that MLB couldn't really do anything, same as with Bonds.

I am also not assuming anything. I said baseball could do nothing barring further information. If it is proven that he used HGH after 2005, he should be banned.

Taytay, I don't have any problem with your original comment, I think Manny and I are reacting to AngeHamm saying, "This is less of a story than it looks at first glance." I definitely agree with you that MLB can't do anything.

An alleged fact is an accusation. It's a statement (example: you used steroids), but it isn't necessarily a fact, it's only alleged to be a fact. It isn't a fact until it is proven.

What happened until innocent until proven guilty? Some paper prints ALLEGATIONS (that aren't even allegations of cheating, really) and all of a sudden Ankiel is guilty in our minds. Let's not rush to conclusions here.

This whole "sources" game leaves me wondering what some people actually know about journalism. Now, there are rags that simply try to rake people through the muck, but as we've seen in the BALCO thing, writers really should not reveal their sources if they feel it's a solid one, a true one and a one tested over time. I'm not going to protect some third-rate intern with the Cardinals (for example) when he's just trying to get a rise. People need to be smarter than that and actually do some effing research once and a while. Sure, there's some things in the story that would lead one to believe things -- but it's the media, we all have our slants one way or the other. I didn't see who wrote the story, but if it's a guy you've never heard of -- he's trying to make a statement and get picked up by some big time publication for his hard-hitting investigative journalism. Plagiarism and crappy sources ... along with ESPN catchphrases ... are ruining sports journalism.

I am praying to god this isn't true...such a feel good story...the real roy hobbs...I've been following him since he entered AA a couple years ago as a RF and to see him finally get to the pros and this is said. I have also been writing about him on my website, this will make my choice of characters really nice if it's true...but when you think about it, either the press just wants to rain down on a guy for having such a feel good story or this does explain him leading AAA in homeruns and doing so great in the Majors. But I really do hope it's not true

That is some seriously misguided faith! What if we each get one prayer that God grants us "no questions asked". You'd roll the dice with this one? The only people who should pray that this story isn't true are Tony LaRussa and Ankiel's agent!

Also, the story says he stopped using HGH when it became banned by baseball. And if he did take HGH in 2004, I doubt it's having any significant effects on his performance right now.

Agreed. Assuming he stopped using it which, until something is proven, we should do. Keep in mind though that baseball does not test for HGH, someone would have to actually catch him putting the substance into his body.
