Feds to Begin Investigating Bonds for Perjury

11
Vote

Several sources told CNN that the federal government will begin investigating whether or not Barry Bonds committed perjury during his 2003 testimony in a hearing in San Francisco. Bonds said that he did not knowingly use steroids or accept them from Victor Conte. They have also said that they will not investigate Rafael Palmeiro because of a lack of evidence.

The story is actually that a grand jury has been convened, meaning that an investigation has begun. Bonds lawyers said they didn't know of it, but there's no reason they would.

I think the important thing to note is that they are not going after Palmeiro. They don't have enough evidence? I am pretty sure he said in the hearings that he never did steriods and then a couple months later tested positive for them? I am sure they could dig up some more evidence if they wanted to.

Yeah but why go after Palmeiro in the witch hunt for Bonds?

My point is this. Why is Bonds taking the fall for a pervasive steriod problem in MLB?

It's simply a matter of being able to make the case for perjury. After examining the evidence, the US Attorney for the Maryland area felt he couldn't make it for Palmeiro, for a variety of reasons. After examining the evidence for Bonds, the US Attorney for the Sanfran area felt it was at least enough to warrant calling a grand jury to try tot get an indictment. Read both stories and what both said, and find out more about what actually happened, before you start delving into conspiracy theories.

I agree it deals with evidence to some extent, but I just find it interesting that Bonds--not Giambi, not MacGuire, not Sosa, not Palmiero--is the focus of the investigation. U.S. Attorney's also like to make headlines and I think that Bonds is attractive to them for more than just the ripe evidence.
