[edit] Description

The FedEx Cup is a season-long points competition that became part of the PGA Tour in 2007. The competition lasts for 37 weeks. The first 33 weeks are comprised of 36 events in which golfers can earn points. The last 4 weeks are a playoff system to determine the FedEx Cup winner.

After the playoff is over, there is a Fall Series of seven tournaments to finalize the following year's eligibility for players who do not finish in the top 30 of the FedEx Cup. PThe remaining positions in the top 125 will be filled based on final season earnings.

[edit] Scoring

32 of the 36 tournaments that make up the regular season of the FedEx Cup distribute up to 25,000 points. Five major tournaments--The Masters, The Players Championship, The Open Championship (aka the British Open), The U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship distribute up to 27,500. In addition, the World Golf Championships events distribute up to 26,250 points.

Points are distributed in each tournament to all players earning official money who are members of the PGA tour. Amateurs can not earn points, and if they finish in a points position, those points are not distributed for that tournament. In a regular season event, points are distributed as follows:

Position 1 2 3 4 5 10 30 70
Points Awarded 4,500 2,700 1,700 1,200 1,000 675 170 50

[edit] Playoff System

At the end of the season, total points for each player determine eligibility for and seeding in the playoffs. The top 144 players make the playoffs. The points are "reset" to the following values for the final 4 tournaments:

Regular Season Finishing Position Point Total
1. 100,000
2. 99,000
3. 98,500
4. 98,000
5. 97,500
6. 97,250
7. 97,000
8. 96,750
9. 96,500
10. 96,250
30. 93,250
50. 91,750
70. 90,250
120. 86,500
130. 85,750
144. 84,700

The 144 players participate in The Barclays tournament. After the points for that tournament are awarded, the field is then cut to 120 players for the Deutsche Bank Championship. The progressive cutting continues, with 70 players participating in the BMW Championship and finally 30 players participating in The Tour Championship, where the FedEx Cup winner is determined.

All 4 playoff events will award 50,000 total points, as shown below:

Position First three events THE TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
1. 9,000 10,300
2. 5,400 6,200
3. 3,400 3,900
4. 2,400 2,800
5. 2,000 2,300
10. 1,350 1,550
30. 340 395
70. 100 N/A

The Tour Championship awards more points per position due to the smaller field.

[edit] Prizes and Winners

The FedEx Cup will award a total of $35 million in bonus money, including $10 million to the FedEx Cup Champion. Currently, this is the largest single bonus payout in sports. The 30 players who make The Tour Championship also earn exemptions for the following season.
