Manchester United defeated Arsenal by a score of 5-4 at Highbury. This was the last league match for United prior to the air disaster in Munich.

The New England Patriots defeat the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII 32-39. Patriots' quarterback Tom Brady is named Super Bowl MVP.
