Brett Favre joined Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, to become the third NFL quarterback to defeat all 31 NFL teams. (Excluding the one they played for) Sorry this story is late, but I spent an inordinate amount of time extricating my foot from my mouth, after failing to predict this Chiefs defeat. I predictably, picked the Chiefs to extend their perfect record against Favre, but WR Jeff Webb couldn’t bring down his second foot in bounds on a pass play that might have put the Chiefs in position to win the game.
As has been customary in the Chiefs 2007 season, their offense looked inept for much of the game. But, as usual, the Chiefs scrappy defense kept them in the game. Patrick Surtain intercepted a Favre pass at the Chiefs’ 8 yard line, and returned it 23 yards to the 31.
TheChiefs gain one third down on their second drive of the game with a 5 yard Tony Gonzalez reception, and a 5 yard Larry Johnson run. Then punter Dustin Colquit pinned the Packers at the 2 yard line with a beautiful 56 yard punt.
The Packers then put together a drive that culminated in a 48 yard field goal from Mason Crosby, to start the scoring. Believe it or not, the field goal took place early in the second quarter. This is going to be a fast game.
The Chiefs continued to look lackluster in their next drive, after getting 2 first downs. One on a 25 yard pass to Tony Gonzalez, another on a 9 yard pass to Gonzalez, before stallin.. After Damon Huard was sacked by DT Corey Williams for an 8 yard loss, Colquit punted 45 yards to Charles Woodson, who made the fair catch at the Green Bay 16.
Favre then orchestrated a nice 8 play 66 yard drive, ending in a Mason Crosby 36 yard field goal. The key play in the drive, being a 48 yard reception by Donald Lee, to take the Packers to the KC 22 yard line.
KC then went 3 and out, before Benny Sapp intercepted Favre for the second time on the day, at the Green Bay 45, returning the pick 15 yards to the 30. This was an ill advised play by the Packers, and the Chiefs capitalized. Huard threw it deep into the end zone to Sammie Parker, who was interfered with by, Atari Bigby, putting the ball at the 1. Larry Johnson responded with a leap, for the touchdown, to pull the Chiefs even. The Jeff Wolfert kick was good to make it 7-6 at the half.
The Chiefs have proven to be tough in the red zone, and they have not allowed an opponent to score more than 20 in a game all year. But now, on to the second half.
To start the third quarter, the Pack do nothing, the Chiefs do nothing, then the Packers drive to the Chiefs 34 and attempt a 52 yard field goal, that sails wide left.
The Chiefs’ next drive ends with an interception by A.J. Hawk at the KC 40, that he returns to the KC 30. Favre puts together a drive that ends with a 13 yard touchdown pass to WR Greg Jennings, that makes it GB 13, KC 7.
Then KC kicks up the heat with a 9 play 74 yard drive, ending with a 30 yard pass to Larry Johnson for a touchdown.
Green Bay follows that with a 5 play, 46 yard drive ending in another Crosby field goal, making it, 16-14 Green Bay. The key play in that drive being a 44 yard strike to Donald Driver.
Then, KC puts together two plays for 19 yards, to Larry Johnson, who was injured on the second play. He would not return. The Chiefs continued the possession with Priest Holmes in the lineup. The drive would include four Green Bay penalties, as the Chiefs drove to another touchdown, this time, on a 17 yard pass to Tony Gonzalez, who had 109 yards on 10 receptions on the day. The Chiefs try for 2, and make it on their third attempt, on a Priest Holmes rush up the middle, after two consecutive Packers penalties. KC 22, GB 16.
Then, in typical Favre style, Green Bay strings together 4 plays for 82 yards, capped off by a Greg Jennings 60 yard, wide open reception for a touchdown.
This is followed by a three and out for KC, and a Crosby 45 yarder, to make it 26-22 GB.
A 36 yard Huard pass to Jeff Webb was ruled complete, at the GB 42, but was later overturned. Because, clearly, Webb was more concerned with keeping his uniform clean, than getting both feet down inbounds. And the Chiefs’ hopes ended on that play.
Green Bay managed another Crosby field goal of 45 yards, before a 46 yard Charles Woodson interception return for a touchdown, made the final score, Green Bay 33, Kansas City 22. And Favre, of course, is headed for the Hall of Fame.
