Fantasy Football Geekly: Week 7

In week 6, most leagues started to see the seperations of teams - either pushing in front of or falling behind the pack. If you're one of the lucky ones that started off 6-0, early congrats. You virtually solidified yourself into the playoffs. The middle of the pack is probably within a game or so and the teams at or near last have some serious work to do. Hopefully this week will be kinder to ya.

If you are unfortunate enough to be one of the following: 0-6, 1-5 or 2-4, what I could recommend (I have done this before & it ended up working) is to trade away my top 1 or 2 studs in exchange for a group that was collectively better than several of my players. I.e. trade 1 player for 2 or trade 2 for 4 - get rid of the under-achievers. That might hurt but if it gets you a victory or 2, it'll be worth it and you can build from there.

There are some interesting games that could provide some interesting and/or high scoring matchups. First off -

Lions at Jets - Both offenses usually do ok while both defenses are less than average. Expect both teams to score over 20 points. Fantasy outlook - start Kevin Jones, Roy Williams, Jon Kitna, Eddie Drummond (only if you get individual return yards), Chad Pennington, Laveranues Coles & Jerricho Cotchery

GB at Mia - The Pack Attack against a weak Miami team... hmmmm... could be interesting here. Fantasy outlook - start Brett Favre, Greg Jennings & whoever the GB RB will be (either Ahman Green or Noah Herron).

Jags at Hou - I like the Jags offense on this. Close to 30 points scored here by Jac. Fantasy outlook - start Byron Leftwich, Reggie Williams, Fred Taylor & Maurice Jones-Drew (good for a fill in especially if you get KR yards).

Arz at Oak - Can Leinart and crew take advantage of this very bad team? Remember, they gave the Bears problems. Fantasy outlook - start Matt Leinart, Anquan Boldin, Edgerrin James, Bryant Johnson & Randy Moss (ONLY Oak player worth of any value here).

Car at Cin - I'll affectionately call this one - the fantasy matchup of the week. The Bengals have suffered heart breaking back to back losses. This shows that the D is very suspect. Carolina however has been on a roll. Fantasy outlook - This could be a great show. I would start all the usual suspects here for both teams.

As for my leagues though, I went 10-6 in 16 leagues but my overall is still a combined 61-34-1 (.629 PCT) with 3 undefeated teams (including the ArchairGM league). Now on to this weeks report.

Injury Report

  • Shaun Alexander - Still out with his foot. Coach Mike Holmgren announced during Mondays presser that it appears Alexander is out another couple of weeks. Official report is out indefinitely.
  • Larry Fitzgerald - Hamstring. Initial reports from Mon Oct. 9 stated he were that he would be out 2-4 weeks. Follow his progress - he could still be doubtfull against Oakland.
  • Chris Henry - This one is not an official injury. However, he has been suspended for 2 games. I do believe week 7 will be his last week on suspension.
  • Ahman Green - He's been out a couple of weeks already not including the bye week for his rib & hamstring. He did practice Monday. Keep a watch on him. So far, it looks like he'll play but have a backup ready to go just in case.
  • Matt Jones - Groin injury. Missed practice on Monday. Some reports say he'll do some running this week to test it. Still unsure if he'll play in week 7. Even if he does play, leave him on the bench.
  • Brandon Stokley - Still out with his ankle. Did not practice on Monday and is not expected to play week 7.

Play Em

  • Philip Rivers - Playing a defense (Chiefs) that allows almost 300 yrds a game against them, I like this matchup.
  • Chad Pennington - Going against the very bad pass defense of the Lions
  • Reggie Brown - Against the Bucs I can see a TD here with decent yardage.
  • Lee Evans - 8 catches for 82 yrds against the Lions, hopefully he'll put up better numbers against the Pats (222.4 pass against yrds per game - 24th rank)
  • Maurice Morris - While he wasn't exactly stellar in week 6 (23 att for 74 yrds), he was still serviceable for a bye-week fill in or flex option. I see more of that here with Alexander out at least another week or 2.
  • Bryant Johnson - If Fitzgerald is still out, which he should be, Johnson should be very serviceable for the fill in. Along the side of Boldin he was still able to grab 6 catches for 82 yrds against the Chiefs. Against the Bears, he had a great TD. With Arizona going to Oak here, I would pick him up if available in your league.
  • Deion Branch - It looks like Branch and QB Hasselbeck are starting to get on the same page. Against St. Louis he caught 6 passes for 76 yrds hitting pay dirt twice. In week 7, against the Vikes while he may not get to score twice, I do see 1 TD. He's a very good option for a 3rd WR and in some leagues, a good 2nd WR.
  • ARZ DEF - Yes you see this correctly. Pick up Arz Def!! Oakland is not doing jack nor shiznit... no O line, LaMont Jordan is fading and fast and no real QB. I LIKE THIS MATCHUP!!

Sit Em

  • LaMont Jordan - He's becoming more & more like a dud as this season progresses. Advice - drop him completely if you have other options. I have him in a few of my leagues so I feel your pain here.
  • Any Browns player. Denver has only allowed 1 TD all year (Tom Brady to Doug Gabriel in week 3). Not to mention Denver also has a very strong rushing defense (101 yrds ave per week).
  • Chris Chambers - Only because I don't like the QB situation there.

Waiver Wire

  • Noah Herron - If Ahman Green is still out, pick this guy up. Verand Morency is supposed to be Green's backup however Morency only got 15 yrds while Herron got 106 yrds with a TD on 20 carries against St. Louis in week 5 before the bye.
  • Matt Leinart - Can you believe that he's available in several leagues? For week 7 I was looking for a QB in 6 leagues - I was able to pick Matt up in 5 of them!! Going by that, chances are that he's avail in your league too.
  • Bye week defense pickups Denver, New England & Arizona

Bye Week Teams

Bears, Rams, Saints, 49ers, Ravens & Titans

Nice work, DB!

If it wasn't for some wackiness, I would be 6-0 easy; without some of your excellent tips I'd be 3-3 at best, because I always seem to bench guys in the wrong week, I should be 1-5, if I listened to my wife's advice I'd probably be 5-1 but because I have taken some of your advice and basically didn't pay attention for 2 weeks due to 'life events' I am 4-2 (but tied for first!!!)

I still lead my league in shit talk, though! (That has little to do with you, but feel free to take credit)

Isn't that the only lead that counts? I'd have to disagree with the Maurice Morris start. there are better options for sure. Nicely done overall.
