Fantasy Football Geekly: Week 6

by user Demonboy

Recently I have been asked why do I do the Fantasy Geekly each week. Well, I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in the USA, Fantasy Football has really taken over by storm. It is by far the largest Fantasy format in all of sports and there's also quiet a bit of money on the line in some of the leagues - my big money league (10 team $150 entry per team) has a top-dog prize of $750 ($250 for 2nd). The remaining amount of $500 is split to the 2 divisional winners. So if you're lucky enough to not only be a divisional winner but also win the 'superbowl' you've won $1,000. Not bad for putting up $150 huh? So any and all help in those types of leagues is usually welcomed and that's what I'm here for - to help :)

As for my leagues though, this was a pretty bad week. I went 9-7 in 16 leagues but my overall is a combined 51-28-1 (.641 PCT) with 3 undefeated teams left (including the ArchairGM league). Enough about me, on to this weeks column.

Week 5 is now in the books and what a week it was. I don't know about the rest of you, but as you can tell, it was pretty bad for me fantasy wise.

Now before I go any further, I must appologize to some of you I'm sure for some of my picks. Last week, I picked Marques Colston and Jon Kitna as good play em's... Colston only got 38yrds... Kitna had 3 Ints and sacked 5 times... New Orleans didn't quiet live up to the hype as they were supposed to. In the same game, I also said to sit Joey Galloway... well, Galloway had what - 96 yrds & 1TD?? There were a few other I was a bit off on, but we won't get into that :)

Sometimes I am off unfortunately and when I am, I own it. I can be good - but I'm hardly ever perfect :)

If you're one of the unfortuante ones that have an 0-5 team you're probably wondering if it's worth competing the rest of the season. My thinking is sure why not? Yes it's going to take some work but you could still concievably get into the playoffs.

Injury Report

  • Shaun Alexander - Still out with his foot. Expect at probably another 2 weeks before he's ready to come back. Wait a while before even thinking about reactivating him. Official report is out indefinitely.

UPDATE - Reports out of Seattle have Alexander sitting out this weekend, but returning in Week 7 vs. Minnesota. Joebook

  • Chris Henry - This one is not an offical injury. However, he has been suspended for 2 games.
  • Matt Jones - He had week 5 off with the groin injury and have a bye week in week 6. Week 7, the Jags play Houston. I would expect for Jones to be back by then.
  • Roy Williams - Suffered a stinger neck/back injury in Sundays game against the Vikings. He'll probably be on the injury report for week 6. Keep an eye on this but, don't keep your hopes up that he'll be active.
  • Todd Heap - Heap injured an ankle in Monday night's loss to the Broncos and didn't practice Wednesday. He is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Carolina.
  • Brandon Stokley - Stokley sprained his left knee Sunday and is expected to miss the next 2-4 weeks.

Play Em

  • Philip Rivers - This is the first time I'm hyping this guy up. But going against the San Francisco 49ers, can ya blame me?
  • David Carr - Yes he's going against Dallas but in the fantasy world, he's great in garbge time when he's forced to throw.
  • Andre Johnson - See Carr. You'll be hearing "Carr to Johnson again" virtually the whole 2nd half of the game.
  • Chad Pennington - With the in-fighting (alledgedly) in the Miami locker room, there's a good chance Chad can put up a good game. God I HOPE so, he's my backup to Peyton Manning in 1 of my leagues!
  • Travis Henry - Finally a Tennessee player I'm endorsing. Against a 2-3 Washington team, I like this.
  • Terry Glenn - Good option going against Houston. T.O. will get more looks, but just like all year, Glenn will out perform T.O.
  • Reggie Brown - Against the Saints I can see a TD here.
  • Lee Evans - The Lions have the THIRD WORST passing defense in the NFL (265.8yrds per game - 30th ranked). I REALLY like Evans's chance of putting up some big numbers. Also, if you look at the rest of Buffalo's schedule, they have the Pats (222.4 pass against yrds per game - 24th rank), bye week & Packers (275.8 pass yrds against per game - 31st ranked) respectively. Looks pretty good for the next few weeks anyways.

Sit Em

  • Daunte Culpepper - Joey Harrington has been named starter for the Fins. Even it's only temporary. This does not look good. How bad do you have to be for Joey Blue Skies to be named IN FRONT of you?? OUCH!
  • LaMont Jordan - I don't like this divisional matchup. Jordan only had 1 real good game and Denver has been doing pretty good against the run.
  • Frank Gore - Yes you read that right. SIT GORE! With San Diego shutting down Willie Parker to 57 yrds, I'll be very suprised if Gore gets more than that.
  • Any Tampa Bay player. After getting embarrased on thier home turf before the bye week, Cincinnati is gonna come out mad & looking for blood.
  • Willis McGahee - How can I endorse the WR but reccomend sitting the RB? Easy - the Lions suck on the passing but are better than average against the run. They (Lions) stopped Alexander (51yrds), Thomas Jones (64yrds), Ahman Green (63yrds) & Steven Jackson (81yrds). The Lions only allowed 1 rushing TD (Jackson) and 1 100+ rush game (Chester Taylor for 123yrds) all year.
  • Ben Roethlisberger - He hasn't been himself lately. I would sit him until week 8 when they play the Raiders. From that point, the Steelers play Denver in week 9 (eh - ok here maybe), New Orleans in week 10 & Cleveland in week 11. He'll turn his game around but play it safe until then.

Waiver Wire

  • Jerramy Stevens - For a TE bye week filler, this one isn't a bad choice. Seattle goes against a questionable St. Louis team.
  • Jerious Norwood - Not a bad flex option for week 6. In case you haven't noticed, as a BACKUP he's got 26 rushes for 217 yrds! Granted, the Giants are tough against the run, but this could work in your favor. To me, this means that Atlanta might switch things up a bit by putting a double RB formation to possibly confuse the Giants D with Norwood getting the ball. Medium risk pick - but it might pay off.
  • Ladell Betts - Portis's backup. Great insurance for those Portis owners. He's got 46 rushes for 223 yards and 14 catches for 119 yards. Decent enough as a #2 RB in larger leagues or if you have a flex option. Washington plays a weak Tennessee team. Chances that he'll get his share of touches - good enough to make this risk.
  • Bye week defense pickups - Philadelphia, San Diego & New York Jets.

Questions

Now onto the questions format for this week. I'll answer questions 3 ways. You can either type a question in the comments section, IM me through Yahoo IM - my ID is xdemonboy or through Meebo. simply follow the instuctions underneath the box below. I'll try and answer as any as I can tonight. Will probably stop around 9pm EST on Tue (10/10) I should also be on Wed (10/11) around the same time to answer any questions there too. Offline question on Yahoo-

Q- I got offered LaMont Jordan and Derrick Mason for Steve Smith. Should I make this trade?

A- Unless you're weak in the RB position, I would not do this trade. Some people would but I don't like it. I only see 3 games that Mason would help you (New Orleans week 8, Tennessee week 10 & Cleveland week 15), Jordan has been more of a dud than a stud. Steve Smith will help you just about the rest of the year. Carolina has Dallas, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Washington & New Orleans still left... I see more opportunity for Smith to just light it up than Mason.

nice job as always Demon. i'm lovin Andre Johnson this season...i drafted him last year thinking he'd be a big sleeper, turns out i was a year early. any thoughts on Bryant Johnson's effectiveness in filling in for Fitz? don't know about starting him vs. CHI this coming week, but he looked pretty good in the 2nd half during the last game.

Ouch - against Chi, I woul not trust any Arz player... Chicago as you know has the best D all-around... with Lienhart at the helm, I would hold off just 1 more week on Bryant... rookie QB against the best Def... VERY VERY RISKY

I agree... Johnson has two soft games after the Bears, so get him now and use him later.

Another stellar report Demon. Lee Evans is a great player to buy cheap right now.
