Fantasy Football Geekly: Week 5

After 4 weeks, the season is now 1/4 over not only for the NFL but for the Fantasy Football world as well since most leagues have thier "superbowl" in week 16. We also know the following:
- The Madden curse is still alive and well - see Shaun Alexander.
- Both Rex Grossman & Chad Pennington are slowly emerging as great sleeper studs.
- Larry Johnson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Shaun Alexander are not living up to the hype as studs in the fantasy world - at least not yet. I bet a lot of owners are wishing that there was a such thing as a re-draft.
- If you're a Daunte Culpepper owner, I bet you're kicking yourself now for that pick huh? Who would have thought this one sunk as low as it has. I guess that one was kind of expected since there is no real offensive line in Miami.
This week, I'm going to switch things around just a bit to maybe help the ones that have started out 0-4 or 1-3. Of course as always, I'll go over a couple that would be in a sense - obvious picks due to thier perfomance so far or are in great matchups.
As for my leagues though, in 16 leagues I'm proud to say that I'm a combined 42-21-1 (.656 PCT) including 4 leagues that I'm 4-0 on (including the ArmchairGM league). Now on to this weeks picks.
Injury Report
- Shaun Alexander - Still out with his foot. Expect at least another 3 weeks before he's ready to come back. Last weeks report stated that he has a hairline break in his foot. For a RB, this could spell disaster. Wait a while before even thinking about reactivating him. Official report is out indefinately.
- Donte Stallworth - Left the game in the 3rd quarter of Monday Night's game against Green Bay. Keep an eye on this.
- Reggie Brown - Another injury from Monday night's game. He seems to have hurt his shoulder. Early personal opinion - questionable against Dallas for week 5.
- Brian Westbrook - Did not start Monday night however, expect him to play in week 5. Early reports still list him as questionable.
- Chris Henry - This one is not an offical injury. However, he may get suspended due to his DUI. Commissioner Goodell's decision probably won't come down until after his trail which may be the end of the month. For those Henry owners, keep an eye on this one.
- Reuben Droughns - Shoulder was clearly hurting against the Raiders. Monitor his status. With a tough opponent (Carolina), It would not suprise me if he's out.
- Matt Jones - Groin Injury. Coach Jack Del Rio is concidering to give Jones week 5 off. The Jags are deep in WR's so Jones' snaps at best will be limited until he's 100%.
Play Em
- LaMont Jordan - After doing almost nothing the first couple of weeks, Jordan came through with 128yrds. Going against a weak San Francisco 49ers defense, I like this matchup.
- Frank Gore - Speaking of a weak defense, the Raiders are about as weak as you can get. Sure he has a fumbling problem around the goal line, but that's why there's the 2nd pick in:
- Michael Robinson - Gore's backup. He'll get the goal line touches. When your team faces a defensless Raiders, there will be a few goal line looks.
- Marques Colston - Going against a bad Tampa Bay team, I really like this. In week 4, he torched Carolina for 132 yrds. Granted 86 came on 1 play but still, you have to like those numbers. If your league has Colston listed as both a WR & TE, I would put him in the TE spot especially if your weak there.
- Drew Brees - See Colston.
- Jon Kitna - 2 weeks in a row I was right about this guy. Ride em' while he's hot. With Detroit's offense finally looking like it's starting to click, expect 260 yrds & 2 TD's.
- Roy Williams - see Kitna. He just might be a great sleeper.
- Mike Furrey - Kitna's 2nd favorite target. He had 2 TD's against St. Louis, that's not easy to do.
- Joseph Addai - I REALLY like this matchup against a very weak Tennessee defense.
- Steve McNair - Going against Denver. Need I say more??
- Laurence Maroney - This one is going to be a stud. Also, have to like his chances against Miami.
- Terry Glenn - With all the attention & focus going to T.O., Glenn will get his chance once again to hit pay dirt.
- Doug Gabriel - Slowly becoming Tom Brady's #1 WR. He won't get much yardage but I can see at least 1 TD.
- Greg Jennings - I like this matchup. If the Lions can shred St. Louis' secondary, Brett Favre to Jennings can too.
- Kevan Barlow - He won't rack up the yards but he will get those all important goal line touches.
- Reggie Williams - Going against the Jets, I like this. With Matt Jones out, Williams is getting all the red zone looks. Expect at least 1 TD here.
- Amani Toomer - Eli Manning and Toomer have developed well together. Against the Redskins this is definately a viable 3 WR option.
- Defense pick ups - New Orleans, Kansas City & Detroit - only pick up this one if your league allows return yardage on defense.
- Kicker pick ups - John Carney, John Kasay, Robbie Gould, Jason Hanson & Stephen Gostkowski.
Sit Em
- Dominic Rhodes - Indi will trounce Tennessee. Rhodes' value will be very low and he won't get any carries during garbage time.
- All Tennessee players.
- Randy Moss - With Andrew Walter having a tough time against Cleveland, I don't see this as an option at all. At least not until -ugh- Aaron Brooks comes back.
- Greg Lewis - I know that he had 2 TD's against Green Bay but he's going against a tougher Dallas defense. Unless you have a very large league (12 or more teams) or have a flex option, I would not advise going this route.
- Joey Galloway - Tampa Bay isn't going anywhere and neither is Galloway.
- Keenan McCardell - Age and injuries appear to have caught up to this work horse. He only has 6 catches for 76 yards all year, going against Pitt is not reccomended. Keep him on the bench or on the waiver wire.
Waiver Wire
- David Carr - He's on a bye in week 5 but in week 6 he plays Dallas. In case you haven't noticed, he's great during garbage time when he's forced to throw. Decent pick up for a filler.
- Jerramy Stevens - Another one on a bye in week 5. But in week 6 against St. Louis, he should be back by then. against St. Louis isn't a bad option to go - again, for a bye week filler.
- Jerious Norwood - Week 5 bye week. But he's a decent pick up for a flex option in week 6. In case you haven't noticed, as a BACKUP he's got 26 rushes for 217 yrds!
- Ladell Betts - Portis's backup. Great insurance for those Portis owners. He's got 46 rushes for 223 yards and 14 catches for 119 yards. Decent enough as a #2 RB in larger leagues especially when you look at who Washington plays in week 6 (Tennessee).
