Fantasy Football Geekly: Week 13

by user Demonboy

For the last few weeks now, I've been starting it off with a bang and give you the top stars of the previous week. Let's not break this mini tradition and get right to it.

Joseph Addai - What a monster game for him - 208 total yrds (171 rush) 4 TD's. Go figure, the 1 week where I took a look at the injury report at the last minute, noticed that DeShaun Foster was out and start Addai for the first time this year and it pays off HUGE!

Tony Romo - Knew he was going to have a decent game but who would've thought 306 yrds 5 TD's.

Matt "freaking" Leinart - 405 blashamous yards!?!?

Larry Fitzgerald - If you mention Lienart for last week, you have to include Fitz with 11 catches 172 yrds.

Anquan Boldin - 9 catches 140 yrds 1 TD. What a day the Cards had.

Devery Henderson - Didn't I tell you to pick him up if he's available last week? Did you listen? I hope so! If you did, he got you 158 yrds & 1 TD.

Drew Brees - Yet ANOTHER 300+ yrd game. This one was for 349 yrds & 2 TD's. Talk about a fantasy stud as of late... Peyton who??

Michael Vick - Only listing him due to his 166 rushing yards. Other than that - big deal... yet another loss ho hum.

Baltimore defense. Completly shutting down Pitts offense. Wow what a difference a year makes for Pit.

Joey "Blue Skies" Harrington - Had a feeling that he was going to embarass the Lions. While his 213 yrds isn't special, the fact that he threw for 3 TD's for the Fins 4th win in a row with Joey at the helm is. Oh Joebook, can I stick my tounge out at ya for this pick last week now? (lol)

Shaun Alexander - 201 yrds!! Yeah, his foot is healed.

Injury Report

  • Amani Toomer - Out for the season with knee injury.
  • Donovan McNabb - Out of season - torn ACL.
  • Clinton Portis - Done for the year (shoulder surgery). If available, grab Ladell Betts.
  • LaMont Jordan - Done for the year - torn MCL.
  • Chris Perry - Broken fibula, just had pin inserted on the 27th and he's on the IR.
  • Ronnie Brown - Hand - out for about 2 weeks.
  • Hines Ward - Knee injury, out 1-2 weeks.
  • Jamal Lewis - Sore foot. Even though he did practice on Wed, he's still listed as questionable.
  • Marques Colston - Still has a strained ankle. However, he hopes to play. Officially he's listed as day to day. I PRAY that he does play - the Saints go against the 49ers.

THIS IS IT

For most leagues, this is the last week of regular season play before the playoffs start. If you're in the thick of it, like myelf in a few leagues, this is most definately a MUST WIN!

Now how do you get this single solatry win that you need? It may not be a simple as you think. Of course you would start off by starting your best players at each position. However, you can't forget about your bench... that needs to be at least decent. As the playoff clinches happen in the NFL, you can expect some teams to start benching thier best players for a little extra rest for their respective playoffs.

Who are the backups to these stars? Are they good enough for a possible start? For instance, a Cedric Benson type wouldn't be a bad pickup. You might also be conteplating about picking up those 1 or 2 players (the infamous missing links) that while they might not be stars, they might be better than what you have. I've extended my Start & Sit Em lists just for this reason.

As for my leagues though, I after 2 horrible weeks, I finally turned it around going 12-4 in 16 leagues and my overall is a combined 118-70-4 (.621 PCT), clinching a playoff spot in 5 leagues (#1 overall in 4).

Start Em

Shaun Alexander - Even when the Seahawks clinch a playoff spot, expect Shaun to start. He's very well rested and will get the ball at least 30 if not 40 times a game from here on out. Monday night's game theme song should've been Back For More by Ratt.

Santonio Holmes - With Ward out and going against a suspect Tampa team, Holmes offers a great deep threat.

Marty Booker - With teams double covering Chris Chambers, Booker is beating the one on one matchups and has been a favorite target of Joey Harrington.

Kansas City Chiefs defense. This is the defense pick up of the week. Week 13, KC plays Cleveland. You have to like this.

Chad Pennington - Week 12 was the first week since week 4 that Chad threw for over 200 yrds. He threw for 286 against Houston. Week 13, he should come close to those numbers by exploiting the Packers secondary.

D.J. Hackett - With Matt Hasselbeck back, and his performance on Monday night (5 catches 67 yrds 1 TD), his stock is rising. While Sea is going to Denver, he could sneak away with 50 yrds & another TD. Low end #2 this week but after that, Sea faces Arizona, San Fran & Tampa Bay. This could pay off big.

Bobby Wade - He was one of the key players on why Tenn did a late comeback win against the Giants. With Young's arm, I would take a chance on Wade if my WR depth was lacking a bit.

Bernard Berrian - Now that he's back from injury, he's a must start in all leagues now.

Ben Watson - The Lions will have a VERY LONG day. While Laurence Maroney, Corey Dillon & Reche Caldwell Will have a good game, don't forget about Ben here.

Javon Walker - Even though Denver has a new QB in Jay Cutler starting, expect Walker to have a decent game since Jay will be looking for him almost all game.

Sit Em

Jon Kitna - Against New England I don't particully like this. While others on the Lions might have a decent game (I.e. Roy Williams & Kevin Jones), Jon gets flattened (sacked) too many times which create negative points in most leagues.

Mike "Idiot Kicker" Vanderjagt - This shouldn't even be a "Sit Em"... this should be a down right Cut Em... He's been cut by the Cowboys and you should too.

Anthony Thomas - Willis McGahee is now back therefore Thomas' value drops dramatically.

Randy Moss - 4 catches for 34 yrds total over 3 games. Note to the Raiders - End the Moss experiment now! Until you get a good offensive line AND a good QB, you can have a WR trio of Moss, T.O. & Chad Johnson and you would still suck! Yes Oakland does face the Texans but do you want to look at your score after the game and get frustrated yet again? I don't.

Dominic Rhodes - Joseph Addai appears to have the starting job locked in. Rhodes still might get a carry here & there but for the most part, expect Addai to get the ball - therefore, Rhodes value is almost non-existant.

Donte Stallworth - With Jeff Garcia?? NO NO NO!!!!

Waiver Wire

Devery Henderson - How many times do I have to list him? He's still very available in some leagues. He's only owned in 78% of CBS Sportsline leagues (as of Tue morn).

Jay Cutler - Make a bench spot for this guy! While he might not work out on his first start, he'll pick it up very quickly. He just might turn into the Tony Romo of late season.

Sammy Morris - With Ronnie Brown out with a hand injury, Morris will be carrying the load for at least 2 weeks. On Thanksgiving, he did very well 12 carries for 91 yrds... welllll it was against the Lions but still, it wouldn't hurt getting Morris.

Marcus Robinson - Lacking in WR depth? Look at Robinson. In week 12, he had 7 catches for 82 yrds & 1 TD. While starting him against a tough Bears defense might not be the best of ideas this week, look ahead at the schedule - Minn plays Detroit (week 14), Jets (week 15), Green Bay (week 16) & St. Louis (week 17). Could be the sleeper you're looking for during the playoffs.

# Henderson or Berrian? (I need you to get this one right, it could be the difference between playoffs and the end of the season in one league.
  1. Drew, Maroney, Addai, or Clayton? (Only one)-Not quite as important, but A win gives me the first seed in the playoffs
I hope you get these right, last week I sat Addai and Romo for Owens and Brees, and I won because my oppenent was still starting Brunell and get this, Philadelphia D.

1. Wow, both can exploit the weak secondary's that they're facing... Almost can't go wrong either way... having said that, I would have to go with Henderson here... with NO facing SF, even with a healthy Horn & Colston, Drew will be spreading the ball around enough that it shouldn't effect Henderson's stats at the end of the day...

2. I take it this is for an WR/RB flex... given that, I like RB's better here - they get the ball more... so offhand, Clayton is out... With Taylor still in the mix, you can't rely on Drew - Taylor has more yards (almost a 2-1 advantage) but Drew has more TDs (6-4)... Maroney vs Det - Det can be run on to the point where it's almost laughable (this coming from a Det fan) but Shaun Rogers finally comes back this week which strengthens up the middle for Det... Addai is the hot-hand right now and going against Ten, have to like this - Harrison doesn't sound happy right now which can mean possibly more carries ... sorry, just thinking out loud (lol) After all of that, I would take a chance on Addai...

Ouch - but at least the players you put in had respectable stats...

Going back to question 1 for a moment... who are your other starters at WR? With Berrian and Henderson going against the weakest passing defenses of the NFL you almost have to start both here... On question 2... I'm changing my mind... I fogot a couple of things when thinking... Maroney is an outside runner so it doesn't matter if Det's middle is strenthened - Det has no one that can keep up with Maroney... The Ten & Indi game may turn into a shootout so while Addai is a good pick, I don't think that he'll have better stats than Maroney..... Go with Maroney here - I feel more comfortable with this pick...
