Fabio Grosso, World Cup Champion

Italy had no one stand-out star player at the 2006 World Cup. Some would say it would be Gianluigi Buffon, who only let in one own goal and five penalties in all seven games. Some would say Fabio Cannavaro, Silver Ball winner, who was masterful in defense and very consistent. But perhaps more essential was Fabio Grosso, the defender who was the finishing factor in three of Italy's World Cup games.
To begin with, he was the one who made the drive in to the Australian box in the very last minute of regulation in that game to draw the penalty which won it. Then, against Germany he scored the winning goal with a sensational curved shot from a pass by Andrea Pirlo, the latest winning goal in FIFA World Cup history. And finally, he scored the theoretically most pressured penalty shot at that World Cup, the absolute final one that won it for Italy. Of course all of this is besides his typical good work in defensive duty. Fabio Grosso certainly deserved the title of World Cup champion.
