[edit] Biography

Fabian Gaffke (Fabian Sebastian Gaffke) was born on August 5, 1913 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He made his Major League debut on September 9, 1936 for the Boston Red Sox. In 1937, his rookie year, he hit .288 with 6 home runs and 34 RBI. Gaffke played for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians over the course of his 5 year career.

Fabian Gaffke, despite an unremarkable major league career that included only 129 games over six seasons (and a lifetime batting average of .227), did some memorable things for the Boston Red Sox in 1937. The outfielder appeared in just 54 games, but apparently made the most of them. On April 26 he had 5 hits in a game against the Washington Senators. On July 14 he scored 5 runs in a game against the St. Louis Browns, and two days later hit 3 home runs against the Browns. (He had only 7 home runs for his major league career.) He hit .288 in 1937, but the following season had only a single in 10 at bats before returning to the minor leagues. Cleveland gave him a try in 1941 after Gaffke hit 21 home runs with a .305 BA with Minneapolis of the American Association.

Most people believe that Fabian Gaffke's best season was 1937, when he hit for a .288 average.
