FIBA Dreams Go Bronze: Greek National Team Downs Team USA in Semis

9
Vote

The USA's men's basketball team -- chock full of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Melo -- lost. Done in by a Greek team featuring a lot of guys with hard to spell names, none of which are in the NBA; and poor three point shooting (9-of-28).

The Americans face Argentina in the consolation game, but bronze is no consolation to this team of superstars.

When USA loses a basketball game without some of it's best players (thinking either that it's not important, or they will win anyway), all over the world, people smile. Sorry - that's the harsh reality.

At least if we had a decent basketball team (we do have a poor one), all our best players would turn up to take part in it.

Yeah Kobe, Shaq, McGrady, Garnett, Duncan, Ray Allen and a healthy Amare really sucked it up last night... Relax, y'all. Hellas has a team of guys that have played together ALL of their lives. They know each other well enough to spell each other's names, they have cohesion. We'll be fine... keep perspective!

If, and maybe and could have and should have... This is the USA and we have the right to let our players sit at home and be lazy during the summer. Its not like they sent a scrub squad to Japan. Outside of Kobe and Shaq the crew was there.

The bottom line is that the Greek players have played together for several years while the US team has only been together for a few weeks. I think it's time that Kobe, T-Mac and the rest of the other superstars get off their high horse and get involved.

I disagree that we should force them to become involved. I'd prefer that they become involved out of pride and respect, but we are dealing with professional athletes so that likely won't happen anytime soon.

The problem is the US mindset. In the rest of the world, people play for the ultimate accolade, playing for your country. In the USA, that is not the Number 1 priority - playing MLB, NBA is. That's why it's so good that you see the top players play Ice Hockey in the Olympics - especially when it is mid-season. These people have time off and still can't be bothered to play for their nation. It's a disgrace, and until this attitude changes, the USA will face the brunt of the rest of the world basketball wise. And after 50+ years of neglect, we're going to enjoy it.

I agree Alex. The typical US athlete plays for one thing...himself. Sometimes you get a group of athletes together that play for eachother, but playing for the USA is not something most kids grow up to want to do. I wish more guys did, but it's an ugly reality.

Even still go back to what you said earlier its the stucture and format the USA uses. Someone earlier just complained that the Greek team has played together for years and thats why they were so good. Thats true. Now add Kobe and T-Mac or whoever from the NBA into that mix. Is the USA team better? Yes, the talent level has improved. Have they geled as a team more? No!! They are still an All-Star team that has come together for a month or so. Its not a matter of star power, its an issue of Unity.
