Expect Another Sweep

While the NLCS has unexpectedly become a battle, tied at two games apiece heading into Game Five tonight at St. Louis, the American League Champion Detroit Tigers have been resting on their laurels. They've had the past three days to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets go at it - unexpected perhaps doesn't cut it.

After all, many analysts (foolishly, I always thought) didn't expect this Cardinals team to get past the first round, let alone win two games in the NLCS. I was cheering them on initially - they helped me win in the friendly baseball playoff pool here at work (I managed to get all the first-round series exactly right, down to number of games). Now they've screwed me, though - I thought for sure the Mets would sweep them. Oh well.

Still, these conditions certainly favor the Tigers. Next weekend's World Series games in Detroit have the potential to be the coldest on record, beating out the 1997 Florida-Cleveland game, where gametime temperature was 38F. Lows for the weekend are in the low 40's or high 30's (Fahrenheit), and could easily creep lower in the next few days. Detroit's rotation seemed to be struggling at the end of the season, but bounced back in the playoffs; this long a rest will give them plenty of time to return to top form.

Meanwhile, the National League champion will have at most two days of rest, perhaps as little as a day. Whichever team emerges from the NLCS - and I still think it will be the Mets - will have a tough time against the ready-to-roar tigers. It may go five games, but even that seems unlikely.

Sorry, National League fans, but it seems entirely possible - likely, even - that the NL will be swept in the World Series for a third straight year. NL fans should hope the Mets win, so at least the Cardinals aren't swept from the series for the second time in three years. That would just be embarrassing.

The only bad thing about a sweep for Tigers fans is that their team would win the Series in either New York or St. Louis, instead of at home. Trust me guys, that's OK. Having watched my team win a World Series in St. Louis, I can say it feels just as good whether it's a home or an away game. A parade at home (or a "rolling rally", if it's in Boston) is good enough.

Please. You can't predict sweeps. The Royals still manage to win 60 games a year, which means in any given 4 game period (against anyone), I wouldnt bet that the Royals would get swept. And in any 4 game period, any team can easily lose 4 games (check the Tigers season game-by-game, I bet they had at least 3 4 game losing streaks), so your whole opinion is just nonsense.

The Mets are likely going to have El Duque back, which should strenghten their rotation. Assuming for a second (although I disagree) that the Tigers could beat the Mets, they will have had a lot of time off between series, that could make them a little rusty. Just that fact alone, could mean that they lose a game or two.

"Your whole opinion is just nuts". A little harsh, Roblefko!

I can't predict sweeps? Funny, and here I thought I just did. We'll see who's right, Robby-boy.

I agree that the Tigers will win but I don't see a sweep happening. I'm thinking the World Series will go 6 games, maybe even 7. Unless the Cards advance, then 5.

I think the Mets pose a different problem than the Yankees, who are honestly their best comparators -- strong offense, questionable starting pitching. The problem with the Mets is that their bullpen is significantly stronger and deeper, so if you get to the starting pitcher, the game isn't over.

I agree Dan. I also think that unless the Mets offense craps out like the Yankees (which is highly unlikely), this will be the best offense that the Tigers face in the post-season. Plus, the Mets are built for large parks. They have great speed and can generate runs. Since the Mets will be playing in two spacious parks, the Mets starting problems might be slightly better.

The Mets offense has been known to disappear for a week though. They could completely crap otu

When you start saying "Tigers sweep", I start thinking "Tigers Weep"... you can't push a rope, let's see who wins the NL first and see who gels... sitting down for a week isn't neccessarily a good thing in baseball. Crazy things happen in October.

It's not necessarily a good thing in baseball, but it's a great thing for the Tigers.

The Tigers starting pitching is not good enough sustain a sweep against the Mets. I think they would be favored to win it, but not in 4. The Mets lineup is filled with hitters and one night they will post 10 on the young Detroit pitchers... the cardinals are a different story.

I disagree. The Tiger's starting pitching is good enough to sweep the Mets because every game they have the advantage in that area. And while everyone is talking about how good the Mets bullpen is, don't forget the flamethrowers the Tigers have. That being said, only a casual fan would diminish how hard sweeping any team in a seven game series, in any sport, really is.

If the Cards make the World Series, I think it will be one of the worst series in recent memory.

The tigers are sitting around for a week doing nothing but working out. The starting pitching is good, but lets not go crazy. Verlander is a true stud but is just a rookie. Rogers has pitched great thus far, but he is still Kenny Rogers and a collapse is the World Series is pretty likely. Robertson and Bonderman are both serviceable pitchers. Both are able to hurl a gem, but both can be touched up a bit. On the other hand, the Tigers do not have a single hitter in that lineup who instill fear in the opponent. If Zumaya is out, that bullpen is very suspect. I think the Tigers are lucky to be in the World Series and will be lucky to win the World Series. I would bet a decent amount of money that a sweep is out of the question.

This is an opinion from a totally unbiased Mets fan, of course ;)

Well lets analyze what you said.

1. Verlander is a rookie - Yes, and he has pitched like a rookie in the first two starts of his MLB playoff career. Neither of his outings were smooth and he had to fight all game to get to the mid-innings. He hasn't had a great postseason start yet, but we still won both of his starts. BTW John Maine is JUST a rookie who doesn't have 17 regular season wins.

2. Kenny Rogers has pitched great but is just one collapse away, which is likely - Any facts to back that up. How many times does a pitcher go from 15 scoreless innings to a historic collapse? And he is a left-handed pitcher, which will help him even more if it is the Mets we face.

3. I agree with the statement about Robertson and Bonderman but you again don't realize that there is a middle ground for pitchers between gems and being touched up.

4. Tigers have no hitters that put fear into pitchers - Last I checked you don't need to put fear into a pitcher to win games, you just have to hit them. And the Tigers have been doing that all through the playoffs against much better pitchers then the Mets can roll out.

We aren't LUCKY to be in the World Series. We won seven straight dominating games, by 3 or more runs each game, against two very good teams. We were a winning team all year and we DESERVE to be there.

If the Mets get to Detroit I'd say the same about them.
