Expansions, Teams Moving, and Season Cancellations, OH MY!!!

The WNBA announced that Atlanta would get a new expansion club coming in 2008. It is most likely the team will be called the Hawks. Anyway, it's good that the WNBA is trying to do something to get the attention of Manny Stiles.

As for the Arena Football League, they have announced that the Las Vegas Gladiators are headed for Cleveland, also in 2008. Although the team is going to be relocated, the possibility of a new Las Vegas franchise is possible. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal:

"AFL commissioner David Baker said Monday he hopes to bring the league back to Las Vegas in time for the projected 2010 opening of a 20,000-seat arena just off the Strip."

Now I'm going to take this into another perspective. Congrats to Vegas for getting rid of their crappy football team, and secondly, a 20,000 seat arena? Since I've never heard of an AFL only stadium, I'm wondering if David Stern is looking at this possibility for a new home for the Seattle Sonics should the city just give up on them.

Finally, the National Lacrosse League has canceled the 2007-08 season following a dispute over new contracts between the players and the guys who run the league.

Canceling league seasons for the sake of money, a proud American tradition. The NHL had 2 lockouts, NBA had 1 lockout, the NFL had 2 lockouts, and the MLB had 1 lockout. When Lacrosse enters the field, you know something is wrong.

So there is your news roundup about sports and leagues no one cares about.

Why the hell would the WNBA team put a team in ATL. ATL is one of the WORSE sporting cities in the country. They cant sell out games when they have a winning team and a winning product, how are they going to make money with that crap?

Loss Vegas is trying to build a 20,000 seat arena for an NHL then NBA team... not just for the Arena Football League.

As far as lockouts go... they are GREAT for business!!! Look how each of the other leagues grew and EXPANDED after stopping their seasons to get the financials in proper order...

Long Live Paul and Garry Gait!!!

Think a 20,000 seat arena is big enough to hold the World Series of Poker?

I guess since you had no news about the MLS, then it is now a legitimate professional sports league?

How about something even more insane... Las Vegas has plans to build not one, but TWO arenas? How absurd is that? I mean, New York City is a different animal altogether as far as sports markets go where there are more than one stadium or arena for a sport (Mets and Yankees), but for Las Vegas? Give me a break. What is going to happen when one or both arenas are in the red? AEG and those in charge of the downtown arena should just join forces and build a new one on the downtown site.

Heh, that Arena Football League team is relocating yet again... first from New Jersey to Las Vegas and now to Cleveland. Where to next?

And a WNBA expansion team in Atlanta? Pfft, like that's gonna work. Didn't pan out in Charlotte (despite a rich basketball tradition in North Carolina), Cleveland, Portland, Miami, Orlando and Salt Lake City. But the WNBA thinks it will in Atlanta? Yet, they bypass Philadelphia. I used to like the WNBA and follow the New York Liberty, but I lost interest big time. Becky Hammon traded away and the team sucks. That's nice.

An NHL expansion team in Cleveland might have a better shot at success than a transplanted Arena Football team. But what do I know, I don't live there.
