As seen on my regular blog Juuust a Bit Outside :
In yet another positive step forward in his recovery from a catastrophic cervical spine injury suffered Sunday against the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills' tight end Kevin Everett managed to move three fingers on his right hand early this morning.
It has been said that Everett moved his fingers "more than a little bit but not with great force," according to a person close to the Everett family.
Dr. Barth Green, a member of the Miami Project, also told the Miami Herald Friday that Everett had showed movement in his fingers. Green was updated by Dr. Andrew Cappuccino, the orthopedic spinal surgeon who performed the surgery on Everett and has been following his condition through the following days.
This is just another positive sign for Everett, who, when brought to Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital in Buffalo after the injury, was paralyzed from the neck down. He since has been able to wiggle his toes, bend his hip, move his ankles, elevate and kick his leg, as well as extend his elbows and slightly flex his biceps. Getting movement in his hands was one of the last things he had not been able to do.
Cappuccino also stated that Everett is speaking now, his first words coming Wednesday when he asked for his mother and his girlfriend.
Everett's mother, Patricia Dugas, left the hospital to have a private meeting with the Buffalo Bills players this afternoon. During the meeting, she told the Bills that Kevin wants the team to focus on the game against the Steelers. The Bills have announced that they have a plan to honor their fallen teammate, which will take place before Sunday's game.
Here's hoping that the steps continue to be forward for Everett on his road to recovery.
