Darin Erstad could be ready to leave the the Los Angeles Angels for their biggest rivals, the Oakland A's.
MLB.com confirmed that the A's had offered Erstad a one year contract. Erstad also has drawn interest from the Colorado Rockies, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Baltimore Orioles and St. Louis Cardinals, but the A's appear to be the first team to step forward and offer a major-league contract.
The Angels are interested in having him come to spring training under similar conditions as outfielder Tim Salmon did a year ago. After sitting out all of 2005 recovering from knee and shoulder surgery, Salmon signed a minor-league contract and went to spring training to prove he was healthy enough to play. Salmon made the team and retired after the 2006 season.
Erstad, 32, had injury problems all last season. He was limited to 40 games by bone spurs in his right ankle. He underwent surgery in October.
If Erstad was to join the Angels than there would be a limited role for him in 2007. The Halos have signed Gary Matthews Jr. to play center field and have two full-time corner outfielders in Garret Anderson and Vladimir Guerrero. Free-agent signee Shea Hillenbrand is expected to get most of his at-bats as DH or as a first baseman. Casey Kotchman and Kendry Morales will also vie for playing time at first base.
With the A's, Erstad could compete for the starting left fielder's spot. The A's have no incumbent there after losing Jay Payton to free agency. Erstad could also get playing time at first base.
