A newcomer to IndyCars in 2008, Bernoldi developed through the European formulae system. He won the British Formula Renault championship in 1997 at 19 years old. The next year Bernoldi moved to British Formula 3. He then drove in Formula 3000 the next two years, finishing 18th and 15th in points respectively.
Enrique secured a ride in Formula One for 2001, driving for Arrows. He would drive for the team for two seasons, until the team folded in mid-2002. In that time, he was unable to score a championship point.
After losing his F1 ride, Bernoldi moved on to the Nissan World Series for two years. He also was able to find a job as a test driver for Honda, testing for them in 2004 and 2005. He then returned to South America for 2006 and 2007, driving in Argentina and Brazil prior to signing on with Conquest.
