English Sports are better than American Sports: Alex Holowczak vs. Jemma vs. Thecrookedcap vs. Fornelli

I think that English sports are better than American sports (mostly they are spin-offs), and I have invited Jemma to help argue. I picked Thecrookedcap as he knows a lot about "soccer," so would know about the most common sport in England (nay, the World). I picked Fornelli because of his clear distate for soccer in his FTW article the other day.

I'll start the ball rolling... England invented all the US Sports... and the US just changed them to suit themselves (e.g. baseball from cricket, hockey on ice, Gridiron from rugby). The only game they invented themselves (other than lacrosse) is basketball, which is not too international. My point is, English sports are played internationally, whereas American sports are not.

What in the world are America best at? Even their 'own' sports they couldn't win at (i.e. basketball and ice hockey). English sports have more variety and are played internationally, therefore the world considers them better.

Thanks but no thanks guys. I'm not really here to get into flaming wars with other people for sport. I'm a writer, that's it. Truth be told I'm not even anti soccer. I like soccer. The FTW piece was just an attempt at humor that was seemingly lost on the members here. I was just trying to use a little humor to balance the embarrassment of our US Soccer team. I only came to this site because a member here came upon my blog and sent me an email inviting me to join this site. Personally I believe that these debates will do nothing but enhance acrimony between the members. I do not know any of these people I am supposed to argue with, nor do I have any desire to argue. Writing isn't a sport, and I don't see the need to try to make it one.

Not to mention England wasn't the first country in the history of the world and in all likelihood got the majority of their sports from other cultures in which they adopted and changed to their own desires. So the argument that you started yours first is rather stupid IMO.

Actually, England did invent most of these games. They were the only country with economic stability in the 1700-1900 period that had an empire. So while other countries, e.g. African nations, were not economic superpowers, and instead were fighting poverty, civil war etc., the games fled to their Empire to help them. E.g. cricket. The countries that play cricket are England, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Canada, Bangladesh, Kenya, Zimbabwe, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand. ALL are in the Commonwealth. Cricket was founded in SE England. Soccer started... somewhere else... I'll find out for you. Britain had the idea of a custom made race track rather than racing on roads, i.e. Brooklands. So while it wasn't the first country in the history of the world, it did a lot to spread sport across the world.

Yes but history is written by the victors. The British Empire WON all these wars and took over all these territories taking with it parts of these cultures and then self ordaining them as British invention. It's the same thing Abner Doubleday tried to do with baseball. Also to counter the argument that English sports are more revered around the world, please explain to me it is then, that for say the championship of the Premier League is not televised throughout the entire world and only Europe yet our Super Bowl is seen live in over 100 countries in every part of the world.

Because they watch the Super Bowl as it is the pinnacle of American Football. ONE GAME, Whereas the world watches the soccer pinnacle, the World Cup. Even America. Most of the world watches ALL SIXTY-THREE GAMES. More people watch the World Cup than the Super Bowl. For a start, most Europeans don't watch the coverage, even if they chose to, because it starts at 11:15 in Britain and finishes after 03:00 (add one hour for the rest of Europe). So I doubt whether the Super Bowl is broadcast to many countries - it may well be. But soccer is watched by more people in those countries.

Yes, but the World Cup is exactly that, the WORLD'S. Not Englands. We're talking about our countries events.

Exactly..."English Sports are better than American Sports." Football is an English sport played on a global scale at the World Cup. American Football is an American Sport, which is played in America, with the pinnacle being the Super Bowl.

Can I just ask what exactly the point of this argument is anyway? English sports are going to be better than American sports to the English and vice versa. The only reason for this is because the English live in England, and the Americans in America. Trying to argue who's is better is completely infantile and a waste of both of our time. Instead of maybe working on a new piece we sit here pointlessly babbling at each other for some reason trying to stroke our own ego's as to who is better than whom. Who gives a fuck? I have seen this type of thing take place on other sites/message boards and all that happens is people get pissed at each other, eventually some of the sites key members get sick of all the BS that comes with it and leave, and the site is left as nothing but a shell of what it was. I've only been here for about a week and when I arrived I thought that this was just a place for aspiring sportswriters to be heard among their peers. In the week I've been here though I'm seeing more and more that with the comment scores, the ranking system, and now these debates this place is generally nothing more than a popularity contest. I graduated high school 8 years ago, and with it the immature tendencies that go along with it. I'm absolutely finished with this "argument" and this topic. I concede. You win. Pat yourself on the back.

Fine, calm down, it's only meant as a discussion, not some Jerry Springer style thing... I agree with your point about English sports appearing to be better than US Sports. And why should you complain? Your + comment score has gone up 35 so far!! The reason I invited "Thecrookedcap" was because of his soccer knowledge that would help the debate. However, I have realised I am fighting a losing battle when there are two English people to back me up, and 600 and plenty Americans to side with their side of the argument. The idea of this was also to try out the new technology... But fair enough if you don't want to be in it.

English sport is way better than American sport. American sport is bloody boring and to be quite honest they are run down versions of English sport.

Here's why I would win this argument - you like American sports far more than I like English sports.
